I recently picked up a Mauser 98 sporterized with .243 Krieger barrel.
The bolt body had the original military shroud removed and replaced
with a commercial no-safety shroud. The safety is part of the adjustable trigger.
I would like to remove the firing pin and spring from the bolt body.
Also have a Mauser 98 with the safety as part of the shroud. Disassembly of this Mauser is fairly easy using the safety in the upright position as per normal military rifle procedure.
My question is how do I disassemble the one without the safety?

Us Keystoners need to stick together. Disassembly of the '98 Mauser bolt with a commercial shroud is about like taking apart a U.S. 1917 Enfield or Remington 700 bolt. Look around and find a penny or dime and you are ready to take the bolt apart. Remove the bolt from the rifle and place the cocking piece against a flat surface like the edge of a work bench and apply downward pressure. The cocking piece will move rearward and a gap will appear between the shroud and the cocking piece. Slip the penny or dime into that gap. The bolt can now be unlocked and unscrewed in the normal manner. Reassemble in reverse order. Hope this helps. All the best...
Gil

Thanks Gil...I'll attempt it in the morning. I picked up this piece when a local shop was swapping scopes and pieces for hunting season. I wanted the Leupold Vari-x III 6.5x20 that was mounted on the rifle. For what I paid for the combo, the rifle cost me less than $100, that's why I couldn't turn it down. It has a pillar bedded high comb walnut stock, jeweled bolt, adjustable trigger and drilled and tapped with Weaver bases. The other Mauser 98 has a military shroud, adjustable trigger and is fitted with a pre-64 Winchester .220 Swift barrel (sporter). Some filling was done on previous side-mount tapped holes, but looks fairly professional but it's just a shooter. I just picked up some Steel-Bed to finish the recoil lug and first 2" of the barrel.
I'll let you know if I was successful tomorrow..thanks again!

Thanks Gil.... got it on the first try....I just wanted to inspect and clean, looking for any rust, debris etc. I'm considering re-barreling the .243
so I can mount a Unertl BV-20 that I've had for years. I'm considering a
.257 Roberts IMP. I want to use the rifles' magazine. I don't trust the feeding of the .243. My chuck rifle is a REM 700 VLS in 6mm Rem.
