An interesting unit...and the price, $250 MSRP, isn't over the top either.

Thanks Mark.

Electromagnetic? Are we talking lead or steel bullets here?

Have a look at the website link Bushy...the machine works on the disruption of the magnetic field as the bullet passes the sensors. It doesn't matter what the bullet is made from, it still works apparently...even a shotgun.

'fraid we are going to need the experts on this. I'm still a bit skeptical as to how lead or copper will disturb the magnetic field. Might also measure the blast and powder carbon as it passes over the "sensors". Seems a bit too close to the muzzle for accurate readings of anything.

Experts...Where are you?

I'm only wondering why all others recommend to put your normal chronograph several feeth away. How is it possible that the dirt, heath, escaping gasses, etc. have no influences on this system?

I'll have to do a little studying on this one. Even so, I don't think I'll exchange the one I have for this one.

Think of the magnetic dampeners on your beam scales - the aluminum tab is not magnetic but as it passes through the two magnets it generates an electric current that slows the movement of the beam. This "new" idea just uses the interference to trigger the timer and measure the time between the sensors - from that the computer calculates the speed of the bullet.

My problem would be the lack of distance between the sensors and how accurate the sensors would be with the different metals. I would have to do some research to find out about those.
Speed of the clock has to be very fast.
Maybe the close proximity to the bullet would negate the difference in metals of the bullet.

Why would I want that thing strapped (yes strapped) to my barrel anyway.

I heard about this before he had a price on it.
I'm a fan already.

Having it on the barrel acts like a barrel tuning weight and will change your point of impact, BUT that doesn't really matter because when testing ammo you only need consistency which this will give.

Other chronys must be placed away from the barrel because the debris and smoking gases from the muzzle blast cause shadows which is how they are triggered, A "shadow" over the first light sensor starts and over the second light sensor stops the timer.

This is not effected by light but uses the metal in the bullet to cause a magnetic disturbance. This works on ALL forms of metal.

Quote::
http://yarchive.net/gun/metal_detectors.html

For those wondering how
magnetic disturbance can work on non-ferrous metal, it relies on
eddy currents being induced in the metal. The phase (and therefore the
POLARITY of the output of the phase detector in my treasure detector)
is the opposite of ferrous, a fact used to discriminate between ferrous
and non-ferrous metal. "All metal" detectors, such as those in
airports don't discriminate and so don't care whether the metal is ferrous
or not.

Hence I would still prefer my Pact 1 chroney as I check for accuracy and velocity at the same time.

Yup...A strap and I'd bet velcro too.
