So i finally aquired enough brass for my 40sw to consider reloading for it. I also aquired about 300 bullets which I know some of you guys are saying that isn't much. I know its not but since it is pert near impossible to find 40 sw anything right now i would say that is a damn good start. Anyway I was depriming my brass and I noticed that the brass that had been shot through my 40 (Smith & Wesson SD40 VE) seemed to be shaved near the base. What i am saying is that when I ran those brass through my carbide die i found that there was brass shavings left over. Now in defense of my firearm, I have nothing to compare it to since the ammo I have ran through it is of one brand. I have not been able to try any others and decap them so I am not sure if it is the brass or only brass that has been fired through my gun. The brass is CBC/Magtech. I was just reading though that this brass is heavier walled than most any other, would that have anything to do with it?

Hmmm...all of my carbide dies have a slight radius to their mouths for ease of feeding. I would think that it would take very thick (or overly expanded) cases to actually shave brass. Is it all the way around the cases or only on one side? I have seen it happen on only one side if the die and shellholder aren't in near-perfect alignment.

I've never seen, nor would I ever expect to, brass shavings from resizing. I'd check the die and carbide ring inside for a sharp edge. I'm with Bushy, some pics might help.

+1 single shot lover, sounds like the shellholder to me too. Also checked and there is .016" diff. in diameter of the rim. So that #6 holder is probably not centering up properly. Could break a decap pin too. So, tlo7 you had probably better try another brand holder and don't forget to reset that die to the different shellholder. Carbide should be set to clear a sheet of paper at full upward stroke but you probably already know that. Good luck. Terry
