I'm new to these boards and had a good time reading everyones stories and want to share a couple of my own. I'm a life long hunter so here goes;
Deer Hunting during gun season in SW Ohio, last day, zero hour and nothing in the freezer. I've been 30 feet up in a black walnut tree for the last five hours. Off to my left, I hear the unmistakeable sound of a deer running my way. The brush is thick as heck but I'm overlooking a couple of trails leading into a bedding area. A six point buck comes busting out of the brush about eighty yards away and he's hauling a**. I'm using an 870 Express with a fully rifled barrel and 4X scope. First shot is behind him, second shot, couldn't tell where it hit, fired one more for good measure. Got out of the tree and started looking for sign at the last place I saw him. Found a few drops of blood and thought "Holy Sh**, I got a piece of him" Found that buck piled up about fourty yards farther on. The second shot hit him behind the last rib quartering away and exited through the off shoulder.
Jumped a cock pheasant while rabbit hunting, at first, couldn't find which way the bird was flying because I was tangled up in a briar patch. Finally see him and he's got the after burners going. Using a Winchester Model 12 with a 30 inch full choke barrel, fired one shot and dropped that bird at 72 paces with 2 #4's to the back of the head.

I remember back when I was about 12 years old, a Hummingbird was "Dive Bombing" a buddy and I. It then landed on the power line about 150 ft away. I told my buddy "Watch This". The 'ol Red Ryder BB gun was aimed and we watched that BB go threw the air like a cork screw and POW I hit that tiny little bird. I couldn't believe it. It was the darndest thing you ever saw watching that BB fly threw the air they way they do. I have to admit I felt a little guilty killing that Hummingbird. I think thats when I learned to shoot at only things I intended to kill. At the time I still thought it was an amazing shot.

I made mine today. I had just finished zeroing my 222 Rem in, when I say a prairie dog with just his head sticking out of the hole at about 150 yards. I took aim and I shot his head clean off of his shoulders. I was alone and had no witnesses, so when I tell my buddies at the coffee shop I am sure I will get the usual, ya, sure you did. It was just a really lucky shot, the wind was blowing about 10-12 mph from the south east, and I was shooting to the north. Just lucky I guess, but I am sold on the 50 gr. Hornady V-Max bullet.

I was prairie dog shooting with my son and a friend from Chicago. After a good day of pest control it was cooling off, so I decided to start packing up the truck. All that was left out was my shooting day bag and my 25-06. My son came back and while we were talking I saw a prairie dog pup on the other side of the pasture. I told my son to find him in the binoculars and spot my shots. My 25-06 is really set up for deer and antelope so the 3-9 power scope is somewhat limiting at long ranges. Using my day bag as a rest I found the target took a WAG and let loose. I was able to see the impact after the rifle recovered from the recoil. My son is shouting you got him !
I retrieved the optical rangefinder, over 500 yards. Stepping it off I counted 537 yards. The best part was my son witnessed the shot. My buddy from Chicago is still not sure it was only one shot.

These are some great stories, I hope mine doesn't put you to sleep .
In the early 70's all I shot was 58 cal. muskets (I had no use for those new fangled rear loaders). I use to go to a small range in Upland Ca. that was run by an older gentleman that always had the first station set up with his supper killer bench gun. Every Saturday I would go out there and this guy would bag on me from the time I got there until I left about my front loader and how no one could ever hit anything at a long distance with one of those things, not like his bench gun could. I was always glad to see the range packed so that I was not the brunt of his jokes.
One day I was getting ready to go and he started in again (I was the only one there). This time he challenged me to try my luck. There was a gong at 500+ yards against the side of a hill that he wanted me to try, if my old gun could even make it that far. The gong looked about the size of a pie pan at that distance, lucky for me, there was a boulder about 15 foot above the gong. I took aim at the boulder and let her go, it seemed like for ever before I heard the minie ball hit the gong. Of course the guy says that it was a lucky shot. I had 2 rounds left and put both in the gong. So I went 3 for 3 at the gong and those were shot off hand. The guy never got on me again about my front loader and was always asking me questions about it. I think I converted him to muzzel loaders.
Today I doubt if I could even see the gong and now I shoot 243, 308 and 45/70 with a scope.

The one that sticks in my head is the day I was out salmon fishing in Alaska with a good friend & neighbor. I was using an ultra light setup with 4 pund test and small spinners/spoons. The only thing the Pinks were taking was a small Pixie Spoon with the green simulated eggs. Well the stream was about 25 feet wide and overhung with brush, you got it a bad cast and wrapped the line around a branch. Well being that I always carried my .45 Long Colt Ruger BH Randy made the comment, "Well deadeye just shoot the branch." I drew semi fast, not even using the sights, pointed pulled the trigger and the branch fell in the stream as I re-holstered the Ruger and began reeling in the branch. It all happened faster than you can read it. All I said to Randy was, "Like That."
The next day in the Helo Deployment Shop there was a new nametag on my locker, "Deadeye Bob" Don't Doubt It, Randy!
I could never make that shot if I tried!!!

LOL! I believe it. I was with a good friend of mine one day hiking in the desert when we jumped a jackrabbit, he drew like you did shooting from the hip and nailed the darn thing. He was a horrible shot with that .22 pistol, even from a bench he had hard time hitting popcans at 50 ft... it was pretty ironic when he drilled the rabbit.
