Morn'n Joe,
Kroil is a penetrating oil. As the can states "The oil that creeps" (or is it the Creep that oils? Very Happy ). Anyway, somewhere, someone discoverd that the stuff removes stubborn powder residue from rifle barrels. It doesn't do anything for copper, but clears out powder in a hurry. The procedure is to brush then a couple of patches with Kroil to clean out the powder then your favorite bore cleaner can do it's job on the copper. Another is brush, wet the bore with Kroil followed with JB. One of the favorites is to mix 50-50 Kroil and Shooter's Choice and get both at the same time. You need to watch what you mix with bore cleaners. Oil has a tendency to degrade the ability of some cleaners to desolve copper. I use TM bore cleaner from Sinclair and don't mix them.

I was a maintinence tech for 26 years. During that time I hve no idea how many gallons I used for everything from freeing stuck parts to sharpening knives. In the mid 70s, the late Bob Pease put me onto it as a bore cleaner and have used it ever since. Now that I'm retired, I gotta buy the stuff...BUMMER!
A few others are used such as GM Top engine cleaner and Mystery Marvel oil, but Kroil seems to be the top choice.

The best advice I have is to get a can, give it a shot and decide for yourself. If you do any mechanical work, I'm sure you'l find another 1000 or so uses for it. Midway,Sinclair have it and if you search a bit, maybe some local hardware stores might carry it.

I've heard people talk about the merits of Kroil for years now... and I've honestly expelled a fair amount of effort but I have NOT been able to locate it locally... ever. Everyone I ask about it just says they have never heard of it... even the NAPA guys who usually have everything.

I could probably locate it online but I'd rather not have to mail order it.

Yes, its tough to find sometimes do mail order may be your only choice.
Buy a gallon! You'll find more uses for it than you might imagine.

I have some 2oz plastic bottles I fill with Kroil,TM,Lock-Ease and whiskey...opps no whiskey...in my range cleaning box.

If you watch Midway, sometimes they put the pints on sale for 3 bucks or so.
I order it direct from Kano labs.

I like Kroil for several reasons. It makes a great penetrating oil getting down real deep to neutralize the ammonia from the copper solvents I use. The patches come out black from barrels that I thought were clean. I especially like to mix Shooters Choice and Kroil (two parts S.C. to 1 part Kroil). It cleans well. Best wishes.

Dallan, You can order it direct from: Kano Laboratories
1000 S. Thompson LN.
Nashville, TN 37211

or call 615-833-4101, it's great stuff, if you have anything that's frozen or stuck, this stuff will free it or it can't be done. Us old Benchresters used to mix, 2 parts Shooters Choice and 1 part Kroil but even if you prefer some other solvent or cleaner, it's great to have on your bench and in the garage as it has a ton of uses.

I was an aircraft mechanic for 17 years, and we used Kroil to free up frozen/ corroded parts. The most amazing testimonial I saw was when were pulling the aileron crank apart in a 727. It consists of two sleeves that are a press fit. We shot Kroil into the joint from below for about 6 hours previous, and then used a small slide hammer to yank the parts. When we got them apart, there was Kroil 6 inches UP the inner shaft! It claims it will crawl into spaces as small as one- millionths of an inch, and I believe it.

All that being said. I have never used it as a bore cleaner.

I'm not certain if Kroils main benefit is as a lubricant or for neutralizing other chemicals. Some of the cleaning solvents like Butchs Bore Shine and Montana Extreme contain a lot of ammonia that can be harmful to barrels. All of the copper solvents contain ammonia. Because Kroil will creep into the tiniest areas I use it at the end of my cleaning process. It also seems to loosen what some of the others leave behind. I've been quite happy with it thus far. Best wishes.
