Crackshot,
A lot of folks get a bad impression of Mexicans and Americans of Mexican heritage, from the movies and articles about gangs, etc. But the real folks are some of my favorite people, good people to be around.

I had given some thought of loading a few cartridges with BP and give it a try in my 45/70. I always hesitated due to the clean up afterwards, but with Hodgdon's Triple 7 it might make it a bit easier. They have cartridge loading data available: www.hodgdon.com/data/m...tridge.php

I shoot a H+R Buffalo Classic 45/70 that I somewhat modified for hunting. It came with a 32" barrel which I thought was a bit too long for the woods. I cut it down to 27" which seemed to balance and swing a lot better. I also removed the iron sights, added a 2.5X scope, added sling swivels, and replaced the steel butt plate with a Hi-Viz recoil pad. I stripped the stock and used about 40 coats of tung oil. The bullets in the picture are 400gr. Barnes XFB's. Boy do they penetrate!

It amazes me to see so many liking the 45-70. I, too, love the 45-70.

Poking around gunshops is irresitible when I travel out of the Valley of the Sun. I was in eastern Arizona and western New Mexico the past two days and stopped at an obscure little shop along the way. I had no intention of really buying anything, but, we have discussed that here before. You never know what's gonna bit ya.

Having had so much fun with the Ruger No1 in 45-70, I couldn't resist this old dusty Ruger sitting in a corner. It had been there for over a year according to the store's owner. I got it for a price well below market and, now, it's in the loading room undergoing some cleaning & renovation. Its a Lyman Centenniel with the 28" barrel. The long 4X Lyman scope is missing, but, I wouldn't have used it anyway.

Pass the Pyrodex, were goin' shootin' tomorrow.

Its to bad that the scope was missing, they looked real sweet with it mounted on the #1
Have only fired about 30 rounds thru my 45-70 #1, but love it.

Shot my first 45-70 last weekend. It was a Marlin Guide gun-nice looking rifle. The barrell looked about 18" long. The guy was shooting Black hills ammo (not sure what grain). It was ok to shoot-I expected more recoil.

Have him get some Garret ammo for that thing and you'll wonder why any one would need a 450 Marlin!

The cowboy ammo is easy on the shoulder. When you start handloading for hunting, you'll get the recoil you expected. Still a lot of fun to shoot.
