And Bushy, I've heard good things about KAHR, but, never owned one. There isn't much in "9" & above that can be easily concealed during the hot weather months around here.

For my CCW class I used a full size CZ 75B 9 mm...however, it is just too large to carry in most situations around town, you know those times when you really want it concealed. And like my instructor said, if it's too large to hide, you'll leave it at home and then you are empty handed.

So, I had a Taurus 85 in 38 spec. for a few years (2" barrel), but sold it (too thick otherwise a great gun) and replaced it with a Kel-Tec P3-AT (.380). I've put about 200 rounds through and it funtions perfectly. Tried three diff. types of ammo and all were perfect.

This gun is so slim and short that I can easily carry it while walking around in shorts and it makes no more of an impression in a side pocket than a wallet. As for a holster I tried the Uncle Mikes but every time I reached for the gun the holster came along. So I returned that and now just use the black zippered "pouch" that came with the gun.

My only complaint with the gun is the mag. release. It needs to be recessed because if you bump the gun too hard the mag comes loose.

My Dad owns a small gun shop, I went over and looked at some 380's that he had, but forgot the name of the one you was talking about. Now I'll write it down. He's not much for 22, 25, 32, 380 for self defence. That's his opinion, Hard to argue with him because he is a CCW Training Instructor. But I still do. lol

Ooops...I was wondering about that. Anyone else have problems with mag releases on pocketed Kel-Tec's? Arizona Hunter...I would think that no less then 200 rounds would make a carry gun proven dependable. At least that was what I was taught...'course he was an old timer, not unlike me now...I also wish to say that I believe that the smallest calibre that I concider viable for defence is no less then 9mmX19 (The Wonder Nine).

Any more ideas on a carry weapon in 9mm or better that you can hide? I know what I'll carry in the winter. My full size Colt .45 ACP(modified) I believe that when it comes to selfdefence that bigger, along with shot placement, is better. Unlike hunting where bullet preformance is high on the list. It is doubtful that bullets will perform as they should from a short barrel and low velocities. I've read a lot on bullet performence in balistic jell for handguns (impresive) and actual shootings by police and others (not so impresive)...

When I was at my Dads he had a nice 380 in stock it's a N.A.A. North American Arms in 380 looked like a nice gun.. a little pricey though $450.
I used to have a cheaper 380 I think it was a AMC, traded it for my Glock.
A smaller gun would be nice even for a back up.

I do not carry my KelTec in a pocket with other items so have never had the problem with the mag release.

The KAHR is on of the best guns made according to a friend that subcontracts CNC parts for Electric Boat. He said their specs, material and tolerances are excellent. He has had many submissions from gun makers to make parts for them on his state of the art CNC machines. He is not impressed with most, but he was complementry of the little stainless gun from MA.

I came to realize the two great axiums of defense, if you dont carry it, it ain't there wen you need it and most social events occour within 10-15 feet. The little KelTec just fits the bill for me.

Yeah, I forgot about the mag release being bumped in my pocket. I've had that problem about 3 times now. That's when I got the idea of buying the Sig Sauer P232 in 380 auto, the mag release is at the bottom of the grip. The KelTec still gets carried more often than any others I have, & I do check to see if the mag has come loose, part of my regiment. Maybe someone who's into gunsmithing can make a suggestion, maybe we should get in touch with KelTec...

In the pocket, that's where I carry the KelTec, I occasionally have to blast the lint away with my compressor.

Like Bushy, during the cool months, I like to carry the SW1911PD...I too think bigger is better. I may have said this before, if I could carry my SW460 wheel gun, I would. Here in my house, it brings out giggles when I bring it out as everyone says it's like looking at a cartoon gun it's soooooo big

My favorite concealed carry gun is the S&W 640 .357. I have carried mine daily for over 10 years in all kinds of weather in a inside the waistband holster.All that is needed to conceal it is an untucked T-shirt.I like this revolver so much that about 5 years ago I bought another identical 640 just for a spare.It remains unfired in its box in my safe. It is small,powerful,reliable and for its 2 1/8 inch barrel and fixed sights amazingly accurate.I have killed groundhogs with mine beyond 100 yards. In the winter I occasionally carry my Kimber .45 but I never feel undergunned with my 640. I have just recently been introduced to the Glock here at the Alaska State Trooper academy and have mixed feelings about them.We are issued Glock 22s and the simplicity and reliability is impressive but I havent gotten used to the idea of a "plastic" gun yet. I doubt I will ever like them like the 1911 or 640.

I'm hoping that more of you will take an interest in this thread. Surely there are more of you holding CCW permits. Let's hear from you

Our CCW permits are $20 a year , my renewal is on my desk right now .. We dont have to list them by model or serial numbers ..
I favor 45's period .. Either the P90DC or the 1911 , no the 1911 aint exactly conceable , but its a 45 .. I wanna take 'em out , not piss 'em off ..
Used twice , once a couple weeks ago , a drunk , whom we know came by late thinking he would catch my wife at home alone around 9pm , talking some jibberish about us coming into the city limits , I walked in the kitchen with the P90 and he retreated FAST .. Then about ten years ago , some kid wrecked his car , high on dope , in front of the house , came banging on the door at oh dark thirty , ran him off with a 44 magnum muzzle blast right next to his ear , he left in a hurry too ..

This is a very interesting topic. As Ogre said....no such thing as a CCW permit here in Australia. If there was I would have one in a heartbeat. Things are starting to get bad in some parts over here and as they say....outlaw guns and only outlaws will have guns....and that is exactly what is happening.

I have carried concealed (legally) as a security officer. Unfortunately I didn't always have a choice what I carried. Firearms varied but included a Bernadelli semmi auto in 9mm Short, S&W Mod Whatever in .38 S&W and a S&W Mod 686 with a 3" barrel. The first 2 guns were about as useful as an udder on a bull!! There wasn't even a guarantee that they would fire if needed. Now the 686 was a different thing altogether. I used a small leather pouch loosely called a holster for the first two. The Bernadelli concealed very easy as it is quite a small gun and the small Smith wasn't that hard to hide either, but the 686 was a different kettle of fish. The only way I found I could conceal it was with a shoulder holster. Only ever had to draw once and that was from the shoulder holster. I surprised myself how quickly and cleanly it "produced", even though I had done heaps of practice.

As for the Auto vs Wheel (Real) gun.....it basically comes down to what you are comfortable and capable with. No use carrying something that you are less than competent with. In days gone by I would agree that the auto was not as reliable or accurate as a wheel gun....but not anymore.

Now, what would I carry given the opportunity? Either a semi auto in .45 or .40 or a S&W Revolver in .357MAG. Brands of auto would take a bit of experimentation and be dependant on availability. I would never carry a .22, .25 or .32.....if you ever had to use it you might just hit the grub and make him real cranky! The 380 is an unknown quantity to me so I'm unsure about it.

The .380, Vince, is another .22, .25, .32 class weapon. My view? I wouldn't go any smaller then 9mm X 19 (wonder nine) and I have little faith in them. If I could hide a Colt .45 ACP on this skinny butt I would. I do, however, have a very nice nickle Mod 19 in 2 1/2 inch barrel that I like and can hide on me skinny butt..

Gidday Bushy, how are you mate? My first revolver was a Model 19. Loved that gun.....it would outshoot my capabilities. Had to rebarrel it once....split the forcing cone with a 155gn bullet doing horrendous fps. The 19 was never intended to consume a steady diet of magnum loads. I think the L Frame (586, 686) is a better option even if a little larger and harder to conceal.

I think it has been pretty well shown that the bucket size lump of lead that the .45 ACP throws is about the best man stopper around and as such makes about the most ideal CCW piece....SO LONG AS YOU ARE COMPETENT WITH IT.
