This year mine is 870 yds., Leica rangefinder, 308 Norma Mag / Sierra 165 gr. game king, hpbt. I had one sitting at the hole, 860 yds., put the clicks in and shot, just short. So I added 4 more clicks and left my buddy wail at the shorter ranges. Well dummy sits at the hole again, bang, took the walk, all I had was blood going down the hole, hit just no hog. Well I left the rifle set up for that hole, it was later in the day when one came out on the run, uphill. I went prone, added 3 clicks, lead, wind, you name it and shot. He went flat, slow crawl, behind the tree. Took the walk, he just about made it to the woods. We did some looking to find where he was when I shot, so this is appox. Ranged to the truck and it said 870 yds. give or take a couple.

I do sneak when I cannot get a shot at a Groundhog, but I prefer to shoot at what ever distance the Groundhog is at. I guess I'm just lazy, shoot and take the walk.

A groundhog at 325 paced yards, a long long time ago.
I've not hunted in decades but will give the coyotes a go this winter. :-)

Got back into shooting 2 years ago and am discovering the depth of my ignorance. If websites like this had been around then, I probably would have gone from hogs to precision shooting on a competitive basis.

I now shoot SB silhouette matches to 100M, and local high-power paper and steel friendly matches to 345yds.

Twofifty,

We're glad to have you back in the fold. Match shooting is certainly a good way to accelerate your learning curve.

Thank you A17Shooter.

To tell the truth, I deeply regret not staying with it. Missed out on a lot of fun.

And folk I've met the past 2 years at various ranges have been top notch. Lots of genuinely nice courteous competitors or club folk willing to answer questions, share tips, or who generously say "hey wanna try this one out?"

I've tried quite a few new-to-me actions and calibers the past 2 years, incl. muzzleloaders! Am learning to reload too. Good thing I don't have any money for new rifles - well actually, I bought a used Anschutz for SB sil matches - or I'd go broke. ;-)

Yep,
You learn a lot shooting silhouette. The big bore folks are fanatics about reloading, just like the bench rest crowd and the SB guys work the 22 LR cartridge from here to Sunday when they get serious. Been moving steel since 81. Love the game and the folks who shoot it.

Herring gull @ 277yds in a cross wind on Sunday.

I reckon the use of a 130gr SST out of the .270 might be considered overkill. Very Happy

I am with you bushy - I can make the long shots with a couple of 400+ yard coyotes under my belt but taking a deer with a handgun at 75 feet is pretty satisfying too. Most of my coyote kills are under 100 yards.

maybe we should start a shortest kill shot thread.... anybody hunt hogs with a bowie knife?
