Neat concept Crackshot. And here I am with a Daisy BB gun and a 3 power scope (I may be 25 years old but my eyse are 64) mounted on it. Now all I need is some pictures of deer at known distances...

Knowing your game animal, and how big it is helps a great deal in the W.A.G. system. If you know the average dimensions of your target that in itself can give strong clues to its distance.
Some folks use small deer pictures and air rifles to practise for deer season.

I use pictures with my airgun. Heck, just using an airgun on indigenous rodentia is great practice.

Before I could afford decent scopes, I used to paint facsimiles of deer and hogs on large appliance cartons and see how they looked in my duplex reticle at different ranges. You'd be surprised at how accurate you can range with a simple reticle on a variable power scope. I met marines who could do something similar with iron sights. One marine told me that at 600 meters, the standard M14 front post sight was the width of the average soldier's torso. I never had a chance to test that, but I think he know what he was talking about.

Where there's a will (and time) there's a way...

Vince,

The numbers I used were more specific but I didn't square the "time" part of them which is what Phil pointed out.

Dimitri

Of course. I had another look at your figures and should have picked that up myself. I'll deliver myself a bagful of uppercuts for being a moron.

Vince,

I wasn't commenting on the figures; my comment was on the unit of measurement.

My apologies Phil...I should have picked that up myself. Embarassed

I use the time tested W.A.G. method. It was good enough for Carlos Hathcock & my Father, Its good enough for me.

Oh, W.A.G. is "Wild A$$ Guess"!! Very Happy I dont need no fancy book or lazer range finder. Confused

I have taken this one step further...I use the S.W.A.G. which is a Scientific Wild A$$ Guess. I do this by applying any and every method I have learnt to estimate range...but at the end of the day it is still only an estimation or guess.

Haven't found a visual method that is reliable but have learned to ue a simple Dulpex reticle as a measuring device. I also carry a laser rangefinder that fits in my breast pocket.
