Better get one quick before the price goes up. Remington is buying Marlin, lock stock and barrel.

I usually shop the used gun racks so the change in ownership at Marlin will now have much of an impact on me. All the best...

Phil,

I wouldn't be worried, Remington is cheaper then alot of other gun makes out there. Plus they priced their new AR-15 in my opinion alright at a MSRP of 1000$. (They made it in partnership with DPMS originally for Military/Police Purposes shown in the SHOT SHOW but I think they own DPMS now. Well I think it was DPMS. Confused ) Smile

Howdy FALPhil: thanks for the post. Remington itself recently was sold in an asset purchase as their debt ratio was very high. Where did you hear about the Marlin merger/purchase?

SHOT 2008 should be interesting indeed! Vegas is calling -- who is going?

I wish, hope to make it for the 2009 show though. Very Happy

As for DPMS, its not I should have said Bushmaster, still it wouldn't surprise me if Remington/Bushmaster's "parent" company went out and bought another gun company. Smile

Cerberus Capital Management (the guys who bought Chrysler recently) bought Bushmaster who turned around and bought Cobb Manufacturing, and they also bought Remington.

I know people who know people.

Dimitri, it was Bushmaster, not DPMS.

Phil,

Your correct, but I mentioned it up above that I made a mistake. Smile

Maybe remington will bring back the heavy rifling that Marlin used to have many moons ago. My nephew had one and the micro-groove rifling in the newer Marlins burned right out of it within a couple hundred rounds.

If I was to buy a 336 I would try to find an older one.

Dimitri,

You were correct! Cerebus bought DPMS and Bushmaster. The DPMS deal is now complete and the Bushmaster deal will complete after the new year.

Wow, I can predict the future now by making mistakes. Laughing

It's called "Ballard Rifling" and I believe most or all big bores have it and have had for a number of years. I know mine does and I bought my 1895 new in '98. My 1952 336rc in 35 remington has micro groove and it shoots great with the sights I have on it. Smile

If they don't make Marlins better than they make Remingtons than the Marlin name is finished. Just my 2 cents worth.

So far, Cerberus has been keeping the production facilities and the production management, so I doubt much will change short term.

But I do have to ask, what you are talking about? I have had nothing but good experiences with Remington 700s and 600s. I have not spent a lot of time with the low end bolt action models like the 788 or the 740/760 lines. I regularly shoot a Model 700 LTR that I get 0.3 inch groups from in factory trim with Black Hills target ammo. Sure, they are not Coopers or Kimbers, but then they cost a whole bunch less.

The 700 line is typically slightly more accurate than Rugers, being on par with CZs and Winchester Model 70s. Fit and finish seem to be at the same level as Rugers and Winchesters, and a little better than CZs.

Of course, my perception is based solely on my experience. YMMV.

Buffalo, which model Remingtons are you referencing? Just curious.

From what I've heard the 710 isn't anything to brag on (I see they've introduced an "upgraded" version of it called a 770) but I've never heard anything bad about the 700s or Model Sevens. I have one 700 CDL that I'm very pleased with, although the factory trigger was awfully heavy. Of course my Marlins have also needed a little trigger work.
