PaulS:
I saw those in the Phillippines when I was training there.
The HUK guerillas stilll had a couple left over from the conflict with Japan.
You make one of them in the U.S. and its 10 years in the slammer. (not all bad, you get free meals, colot tele, free eye care, free dentqal, free medical, etc/). Its almost like being a disabled Vet but better, you don't have to travel 250 miles to hospital, and you have someone watching you 24/7.
Any way----good luck with your situatuion.

WH,
I hadn't heard the word "HUK" since 1970. Alongapo City, I believe it was.
No, I take that back. I was working with a Philippino about 10 years ago who told me he was from Mindanao (SP). When he told me where he was from, I asked him if he HUK. He gave me the strangest look and never answered. All I can say is "Da*n HUK."
Have a good one
Cary

Onthe LasGallinas
I did some training in the Phillippines during the Vietnam conflict. I was with the 2nd Battalion 4th Marines in a Battalion Landing Unit.
I visited Alongapo City once or twice. Also had occassion to go to Mindinao to help with an over population of pigs.
I also spent some time in the hospital at Clark Air Force Base. I loved the Phillippines. Had some great experiences there.
Hell of a lot better that Okinawa. BTW I also was in the Phillippines in/out in 1970. later

WH,
I love the Phillippines also. Beautiful place. Been to Clark also. I actually rented a car and drove from Clark to Alongapo City. I was station in Vietnam during that time (in DaNang). Land-based Navy, co-existing with the 1st Marine.

In late 1970 I was assigned to a CAP Unit in the Northern Highlands. A CAP unit was a seven marine outfit with one Navy Corpsman. We worked in and around the villages in about a 10 mile square. We were responsible for the security in our area. Not the best duty, but we had no officers to screw things up, they stayed in Phu Bai in the rear with the gear.
Clark was a greqa place--PX-Commissary, about anything a guy could want-they had or knew how to get.
Anyways that was waaaay off topic. So I will close, hoping I have bored no one with my ramblings.

I served in the pacific on ships. Saw Viet Nam from a far for three months on "Market Time" as we pin point place shells on land targets for the Marines and boarded junks looking for contraband. Spied on the Russians in the South Pacific Russian rocket target below the equator mostly...Most harrendous duty was a year on GUAM (G-U-A-M...Give Up And Mast******). Other then that...Nothing exciting like you guys...
Oh...Forgot...Observed the first Polarus and Presiden submarine launches in the Pacific. And chased nuke subs with our VDS for fun...None escaped us...

Bushy
Before being assigned to the CAP Unit. I was on and off ships from late 69 to mid 70. Spent a lot of time on the LST's ie:USS Washtenaw County, USS Westchester County, and the like. More Marines on board than sailors.
When I enlisted I decided to go Marines because I didn't swim well, don't like flying, and the Army was getting too many GI's killed. So I went Marines.
My first assignment was shipboard, jumping out of helicopters into the jungle.
I sort of wished then that I had joined the Navy. I really like shipboard life.
There I go again with the ramblings, won't be long before the home misses me and comes after me.

I spent 16 years at sea out of 22. Six years ashore and three years of that was small boats like harbor tugs...Two years as a Brig guard and one year incharge of an Auto Hobby Shop on base. Retired off a mine sweep as MPA (Main Propusion Assistent) incharge of ALL Engineering answerable only to the Captain...

Hi you all; Got a beer and a stump, can I chime in here? I spent my time in Naval Aviation. 1954 through 73. Times in VietNam were a 9 1/2 month cruise on the USS Independance as Maint Chief, Leading chief and aircrewman of a 4 plane detachment of WF-2's. (The little two engine plane with a flying saucer on top.) Then got transferred to VQ-2 in Rota Spain for 4 years. I don't have any idea how many trips I made to Danag on special ops. Was an electronics warfare intercept operator flying ops out of an A3D and an EC-121. Spent some time in Alongapo and at Clark. Lots of fun. Best time was when I got volunteered as the Shore Patrol Chief in Alongopo one night. Can tell some stories on both VietNam trips, but thats for another day.
Thanks guys and I appreciate your military service. I think every red blooded 18 year old right out of Hi school ought to spend at least two years in one of the services.
Take care, Cya OB

OBOne...Welcome aboard...And I agree that every 18 year old should serve. It would at least break the apron string.
'54 to 73'?? I think he's older then me...Or Cary.. Sounds like he already has a beer...
Your 19 years of service is also appreciated...
