I think the Vanguard is a Howa action, and not a Weatherby design.

Yes, I am talking about the Weatherby rifles and weatherby calibers. The Weatherby rifles that have the massive freebore.
I have a friend who built a Rem 700 in 300 Weatherby Mag and had to reduce his loads because of over-pressure signs. He never could get the velocities that the cartridge is supposed to be capable of. We chalked it up to the lack of freebore in his gun.
His gun was a good shooter though - sub MOA.
