Sunday at 4:30 PM I was returning to Destin from the farm when I saw what my mind said was a little kangaroo on the side of the road. It was ahead, in the grass on the shoulder, about half way between the trees and the pavement, in broad daylight out in front of God and everyone. I could see the stoplight in Niceville, about a half mile ahead.

When I got up to the kangaroo, it turned out to be a full blown western coyote, standing straight up on its haunches, front paws along its sides, taking a pause for the cause. I have never seen a canine of any kind do that before.

Zoom and I was by, but that was a very strange thing to see, right on the outskirts of town with 4 hours of daylight left.
Best,
Ed

That was good whiskey wasn't it. Western coyote in Florida? Oh...That's right. Destin is on the western side of Florida... Pretty good sized was it? Laughing I've noticed that the coyotes here in Missouri are relatively small (Not to mention the oposums, racoons...) compared to the ones on the western end of this great country...

Nope, The one I shot about three weeks ago was the size of a good sized dog, pretty heavy for a yote, short ears and a brinel patch on the schoulders and down the back bone. It had redish brown hair, exactly like the pictures on the net of an eastern yote. The Bee stung him in the neck at 100 yards at 5:30 AM while I was having my first coffee. I understand the eastern yotes are bigger and better fed than their western cousins.

The one I saw on the side of the road doing his business was skinny, scrubby looking with a sharp muzzle. Similar to a red fox but about half again bigger. That is the reason for the description, this did not look like an eastern well fed yote.
Best,
Ed

It is odd how your mind will jump to a conclusion when you first see something at a distance. I guess you run through the library of images in the brain and fix on something you have seen before, in an instant.

The kangaroo was just what my brain decided it was. I thought it was a pretty funny thing to happen. But then again, a trip to the land of OZ might not be so bad....
Best,
Ed

Not so unbelievable. My in-laws live in Shalimar (south border of Eglin Air Force Base) and I have spent some time on the base. I have seen quite a few coyotes down there and all of them looked pretty poor too. So, coyote is very believable. Even in that miracle strip metropolis.

Being a Forester and Wildlife Ecologist (dual degrees), about the only thing I learned in University is that no rules apply. Animals will do the craziest things. So, his sitting up and looking, I do believe that too, but would like to see it for myself.

Reckon you could get him to repeat it? I mean, after you return from your vacation?
