I've been looking for a crossdraw holster for my Taurus 454 Raging Bull with a 5 inch barrel.
I purchased a holster from Simply Rugged Holsters, which is a nice holster, but the gun rides too high in the crossdraw mode and the butt pulls away for the body.
I'm looking for a crossdraw holster where the belt is at or above the cylinder area , so that the weight of the gun doesn't pull the gun away from the body and rides close.
Do any of you have any one who makes one?

Sorry, silver timp. Not sure I can help. I remember some evaluation of cross draw holsters in Guns & Ammo in an article about how to carry in our National Parks. Right now their site is down for maintenance.

I've been wanting this Galco for my .45 Colt Redhawk, but haven't come up with the $$ yet. (Darn appliance failures! Now the dishwasher is on the fritz!)

I have a cross draw holster for my Redhawk made by Kramer Handgun Leather that I really like and they make it for the Raging Bull as well. I like it because it has good retention and doesn't have that stupid retaining strap that just gets in the way when you need to draw the gun.

Another place you could get one is from Milt Sparks but their order process is a bit tedious.

Pardon me, but is there a difference between a crossdraw and a normal holster? Am I wrong to think a crossdraw is a normal holster carried on the "wrong" side?

Not true.

If you wore a holster with zero cant then the gun will be difficult to draw. If you wore a holster with the FBI cant, about 15 degrees, then the grip will be angled away to the rear of your body.

A crossdraw holster angles the butt towards the front of the body and then you can accuire the grip. If worn strongside, then the grip will be pointed towards your back.

Thanks. Never to old to learn. Not that I will need it soon because a permit to carry is here almost as difficult to get as a license to kill...
I'm still hoping on more wild pigs and some nasty accidents, so that here hunters could also carry that kind of protection. And then I also would prefer crossdraw so it doesn't interfere with the rifle I carry on the strong side.

That seems odd to carry yopur rifle on the strong side. I have always carried mine weak side so I can catch the sling with my elbow to use it for support.

Marty, I think that's a habit one devellops when hunting small game. My double barrel (or the semi-auto) is hanging with barrels pointing down on top of my wrist with the stock under my upper-arm. When your jacket has these special pockets, you can even warm your hand in your pocket and still be rather fast on target.
It might just be a habit, but it has some advantages. My rifle is on the right, my dog will be on the left when she's "on footh".

All this is easier done than explained.

I think the big difference between you and me is that I use a lot of shotcartridges (small game) and (for hunting) only a few bullets (big game) every year. And the shotgun often will have its sling removed, so that it cannot interfere with clothing.

I have always carried mine weak side

I too carry my hunting rifle on the weak side with the barrel pointed down. I carry my shotgun this way during 3-guns, also. This leaves my strong side hand free for drawning my pistol. My left (weak) hand can unsling my long-gun and start it on way to my shoulder. Also, when manuevering, the weak hand can steady the long-gun when slung to the shoulder. For hunting, I have changed to a thigh holster on my right (strong) thigh. It has been very convenient because, on cold days, I can wear my coat and the pistol can be drawn without any interference.

I've never really thought about why I carry my rifle the way I do, but I too carry my slung rifle on my weak side shoulder. That is also the most comfortable and natural for me as well. I have never had to mount my rifle in an extreme hurry, so speed is not an issue and it doesn't matter which side I carry the rifle. In fact I was always taught (in the Army) that slow deliberate movement in the bush is not always noticed, whereas fast movement rarely goes unnoticed.

I note that you say you carry your shotgun without a sling Aloys. I have an O/U 12g and have just recently fitted sling swivels and made a sling to carry it...gets damned heavy after awhile when also carrying ammo and a .22 rifle around the paddocks looking for rabbits.

Cheers, Vince

Vince, it's heavy and you add weight? Smile
Between season I also like the sling, but not during season and certainly not on a dove-hunt.
I think you should try a 'decent' gun once Smile
I recently got an FN Auto-5 (but limited till 3) in cal 20. Its weight is about 2.6 kg. And here we have a saying: it's easier to point a stick than a balk.

Must have been lost in translation. Aloys, what is a balk? Something heavier or bulky?

Is a 'balk' slang English? How do you call a piece of wood the size of a rafter, not planed? Do you prefer 'beam'?

I'll 'translate': it's easier to point my 2,6 kg FN Auto 5 in cal 20 to the target than my friend's (13 kg without optics!) Steyer in .50 BMG Smile
