Yup, I too noticed this with Varget, and the solution was to increase the powder load, gradually the problem with unburnt powder went away while staying under max loads.

I'm shooting an 1868 Rem Rolling Block so I was trying to stay as close to min as possible. Switched to H4895 and problem solved. Lower pressure than Black Powder with more velocity and no clean-up mess.

The only way to obtain a consistent ignition on magnum loads in a revolver is with a heavy crimp !!!

If you say so!

I've upped charge weights on reduced plink loads a wee bit (and START mag loads too!) and that increased the pressure and that cleaned it up and made combustion complete. No ash or unburnt kernals.

Charge weight affects pressure. Certain powders require a certain pressure under certain circumstances/conditions to combust their best. W/o the propper pressure they just fizzle. (edited a lot due to puter futzing out and chopping my posts etc sorry)

Wrong.

You can only crimp so heavy till something gives- case or bullet. That's like sying the same thing for sizing a case past normal to increase pull weight....can only go so small before the bullet re-sizes the case back out!

A roll crimp is stronger than a taper for obvious reasons.
And- and, the primary function of the crimp is TO HOLD THE BULLET IN PLACE SO IT DOES NOT CREEP DURING RECOIL AND JAM THE ACTION. Can crimp clean up a load? Why not! But that's NOT IT'S PRIMARY FUNCTION.

If the bullet does not creep under recoil and the OAL stays the same combustion/pressure does as well so consistency of the load is maintained.
I can single shoot my mag loads in my revolver, uncrimped, one atta time, and they fire jsut fine and are consistent.

Nope. Dont have a scope moutning kit, either, or an e-scale, trickler etc etc. I load by hand, with a scoop and a beam scale using same lot brass, same powder lots, etc etc. I guarantee my charges are as close as humanly possible to being the exact same amount. If there's any spread in speed it's due to other factors- not the charge weight. That could come from flash hole diameter, soot, chamber alignment/size, barrel fouling, the moon and stars, the list goes on.....

What's more important to you....speed or POI? I dont give a hoot if the deviation in speed is 20'/sec or 200'/sec, if it hits the same spot or darn near over and over that's what really matters and yes it's going plenty fast enough for propper terminal performance (i.e. expansion, penetration).

Here's a group I recenly shot from my 300m @ 300y off a bipod. Very basic reload w/ no case prep. I'd say that's plenty accurate and fast enough- how about you? Yes I jerked the last one trying to fill in the middle. My pistol loads do the same @ 100y and both hit with a ton of authority. PANG!

Stovey, Regardless what's primary crimp is still a function of maintaining a consistent ignition !!! (in mag revolver loads)

I could really careless as to your methods of reloading, although it does seem to work for you.
You've done good boy.....I give you a pat on the back with an at a boy to boot. Do you feel better now ???

My whole point about the chronograph wasn't to insinuate your loads suck or have inconsistent velocities. It was in regards of comparative testing.

As for what's more important to me ..............consistency is !!!

Roger to all of that sir! Very Happy

Thanks for the compliment, it's well taken I can assure you. Cool

I actually wouldn't mind a chrony some day should funds allow.
Last outing one gent offered to let me shoot a few over his as he was curious about my loads (fellow 300mag owner). I probably should have taken it in hind sight cuz now you got me curious. *doh!*
