I have to agree that if the antis hear a gun owner say that 5 rounds is safer in a pistol, next thing you know they'll want you as a poster boy for their push to limit magazines to 5 rounds. If you feel safer then I'm fine with that, but I just hate to fuel their gun grabbing ways.
A sorry state of affairs, but I can't help thinking that if BATFE saw you with a pistol that even accidentally went full auto, you would be facing charges.

Guess I didn't type enough words. chambered, you are correct. Safety is ALWAYS a concern. However, safety is no bigger or smaller an issue with 5, 10, or 30 rounds in the magazine nor would limiting the rounds to 5 make the range safety officer feel any safer. In fact, I think they would be more concern with having to deal with more magazine changes and charging with the increase opportunity for loss of muzzle control with 5 rounds in a mag.

At the police range (where I am an associate member) they only let you load single rounds on the rifle range. The range officer let me load three rounds in my new SKS to try it out and it fired one and ejected the spent case and the next round - before it had fired. We never did figure out how it was done but there it was on the ground with the bullet still in the case and a primer with not a mark on it.

This has happened when guns have gone full auto. Permits and licenses have been lost, fines have been charged.
Also, if you think your guns are safe here because we have the NRA then you aren't at all familiar with the regulations in CA, NJ, MA and Chicago. The anti's are always ready to pounce on any "safety" issue, no matter how misguided or untrue.
Finally, I must agree that:
"In fact, I think they would be more concern with having to deal with more magazine changes and charging with the increase opportunity for loss of muzzle control with 5 rounds in a mag."

I have seen disagreements between bullseye shooters and action-pistol shooters before, but not stated as a safety issue.

In fact, this is the first thread I have yet seen on this website that borders on an argument. On other sites I have seen the inane assertion that only 5 rounds should be loaded in a revolver, with the hammer over an empty chamber. This isn't true for modern revolvers, only antiques.

Sorry, Eric, but I couldn't disagree with you more.

How many rounds you have in a pistol or rifle has no bearing one the safety of the weapon. The antique POS that went full auto on me was unsafe with one bullet in it! It is all better now though.

When I shoot bullseye I load five because that is what the rules say, when I shoot PPC I load six, When I shoot IDPA our IPSC - as many as the mag will hold 'cause that what the rules say.

Like Dawgdad, when shooting a match I load what I'm allowed to load. If I'm testing a handgun load for accuracy I load 5 (for centerfire rifles I load 3 and rimfires 5). If I'm chronographing a load I shoot 10, which could be one or more magazines. If I'm testing the equipment or plinking I load a full magazine.

Any truth to the rumour that Christian Slater was killed last night in a bizarre snowboarding accident in Europe? Just thought I saw something about it last night on the net.

Vince hi-jacking a thread.....it ain't so !!! Faint

Dawg........IDPA is 10 max.

When it comes to the anti's there is no practicality in their agenda let alone any care about safety...........argue mag capacity all you want but I do believe we already won that one when the assault weapons ban sunset clause was enacted !!! Shocked

BigBlue--I have a BATFE Agent on my Leagues. He is a great guy and is on our side of the gun control issue.

Eric, so you are trying to convince us we would all be safer if we limited ourselves to 5-rounds in our magazine. I think you are confusing the feeling of comfort/familiarity you get from your routine at the range with safety. Better add a few more banghead smilies to your signature. Oops, guess you will have to limit it to 5.
