Soon going to feel like a real antique what with hunting with open sights or a fixed power scope. Even the game will laugh at me.

One aspect that left me unimpressed. Did you see the one video where a lady in her best attire sat down at a bench on the porch of their luxtury hunting lodge and shot the gun for the first time (maybe the first time she ever shot) and killed an animal at long distance. yep, bad idea.

Want to hear something ridiculous?

In my state starting this year they started a new program to attract new hunters whereby they can hunt with someone for a few years BEFORE they have to take and pass the hunters safety program.

Yes, they can go down and buy a hunting tag without having ever touched a firearm before and head into the field accompanied by another hunter.

I am sooooo opposed to this.

Not good Dallan, but I'm sure this has been happening for as long as there have been hunters. We all do it with our mates and children.

Is the hunters safety program a lengthy course? I can see what they are trying to achieve, but I think they need to revisit the details. A number of years is far too long before formalising with the course. I would suggest a single hunting season with an accredited experienced hunter and a designated number of hours in the off season learning about animal habits, including protected or "no shoot" species. This could go towards their course with an RPL of competencies.

They could consider giving a free tag to the experienced hunter who takes a newby out with him...but only amateur hunters, not those who make a business or charge the learner to teach them.

Out here there is a requirement to complete a Firearms Safety Course before applying for a firearms licence and this has turned into quite a money spinner for some.

That's scary bud. Not much thought went into that decision did it Scratch

2 4 hour classes where they go over gun safety, species identification, sportsmanship, stewardship, hunting regulations etc etc. You can take the bloody thing online too... then just show up for the final test. Opon passing the test, there is a 50ft rimfire shooting test that must be passed with a 7/10 score.

Pass all of that, and you get a free hunting license for small game.

I'll bet. Anytime someone comes up with some new system, people find a way to profit off it... then after a time the profit becomes more important than the thing itself.

Well, from what you say, the course is certainly not difficult so in reality there isn't a need for the few years of hunting before sitting the test. I suppose the up side to this is there is good support for hunting by the authorities.

I think if hunters concentrate on educating their kids and grandkids etc, things will be good.

Talk about money, I think they raised the license and tag fees here, or are talking about it, because of low numbers of hunters and fishers. Sort of a reverse logic, because the fees are so high and gas prices so high that fewer people are goin out to hunt and fish. They have a budget deficit of something like 32 million dollars and I just read an article that said fees may increase as much as 75% and an additional ocean fishing endorsement is proposed. Sounds desperate to me. To put it in perspective a proponent for the fee increases says our current fees only amount to 9 cents per day and the increases will only amount to 12 cents a day. For some reason cutting staff isn't on the table (like the guy that came up with the "it's only 12 cents a day" idea). I don't think government employees should have that much say in the future of their paychecks.

WRT to hunter ed.

Back in 2006, I was given a waiver based on my having a UK hunting licence.
At the time, all that was needed to get one was £5 & enough time to queue at the Post Office.

I guess the assumption was that those buying UK licences had jumped through all the hoops to get a firearms licence but that wasn't actually true.
Of course in my case I have a lot of firearms experience brought about by other than hunting/target shooting but it goes to show how rules can be circumvented.

I hunted elk in CO for five years, then they more or less doubled the price of an OTC tag, so I stopped & also started buying an NM small game licence instead of one from CO.

Their loss, not mine.

I don't think government employees should have ANY input as to their salary WRT the overall budget.
