My father in law just gave my daughter her first gun .
It is a Savage 20g single shot model 220A.
He states its a fairly old gun and the gun is in great shape. My question is....
How much is it worth? Dont get me wrong, My daughter will keep it for ever and coming from grandpaw its worth millions to her. I just would like to know what grandpaw actually gave her $ wise. I thought it was pretty awsome for him to do that and she is going to try to kill her first rabbit with it 2morrow. Well thanks in advance for any info about the gun. Thanks Chad

I tried auction arms and they didn't list any. I don't know about collectablity but for a shooter I think a 12 would get a little more then a 20....again,Just an opinion

You can't (shouldn't) put a price on grandpa's old gun. It's for his Granddaughter, not ever to be put up for sale.
I just gave my Grandson his first gun. An old Winchester 12 ga pump. I bought it used when I was in Spain. That gun has gone with me all over the world for the last 40 years. It has killed everything from doves, squirrels, rabbits, deer, duck, geese, skeet and even a few traps (grin). You can't put a price on the memories that have been passed on with that gun.
Tell your daughter to get Grandpa to tell her where and what that gun has gone and done.
Best regards OB

Well said guys. I am an old soppy sentimentalist and I agree wholeheartedly with your sentiments.
This is a subject that is very near and dear to my heart at this time.
My idea of a family heirloom is not necessarily something that is worth a motza...it is something that has been passed down from hand to hand by previous generations, even if its only a simple trinket. Its value is not measured in monetary terms, but in who it came from and the memories and love with which it came.
I have a brother whose idea of an heirloom is something that can be converted to cash so you can "see" its "value". WRONG !!!
Those heirlooms are then lost to future generations of the family.
Cheers, Vince

Hence why I am glad and I just about "stole" my grandfathers service records when the opportunity came up, and now I keep them locked up in my gun safe so others do not damage them. They are just pieces of paper but they detail my grandfathers life from 1940 to 1950. The 10 years of his life that he rarely ever talks about.
Price means little, a 20$ Cooey that has been passed down means more then a brand new 200$ Savage "made" copy of the same gun.

PrisonPolice, I'm sorry mate....after reading back over my post I think I have been a little harsh...and for that I apologise.
Here's a great opportunity for you to take your daughter out and teach her all about firearms, firearm safety...MOST IMPORTANT...and then teach her how to bust a few clays...its awesome fun...or to teach her how to hunt. The best part is you will be spending good quality time with your daughter, and that is something every father, or mother, loves to do.
After doing all of the above mate, you will see the true value of your father-in-laws gift to BOTH you and your daughter. I wish you all the best and I know that you get as much enjoyment out of this gift as I'm sure she will.
I just wish I could get my daughter's to go hunting with me.
Cheers, Vince

Sitting beside my computer on my desk are an old ceramic ash tray, made in Japan in the shape of a Colt Peacemaker, and a handcarved walnut letter opener. No one could possibly buy them from me for any amount because I remember seeing them on my Grandfather's desk whe I was just a little kid. Hopefully someday one of my (future) grandkids will ask their mother why she keeps that silly old ashtray and the wooden letter opener.

Chad,
I will go in another direction with this. When you do take the daughter out, buy some target loads for the 20ga single shooter gun. Most of the 20ga guns are very light and kick like a mule, especially the "youth" model guns. Use 7/8 oz loads and she will be a lot better off.
That advise comes from 20/20 hindsight by a father who has been there and did not know.
Best,
Ed
