The areas around Sheridan are good for either.
Area 38 for elk, lots of cow/calf tags available, no wilderness areas there, just national forest so you don't need a guide, no grizzly bears in the Big ... |

Iwould take my current rifle. A Parker-Hale in 30-06. Beautiful and accurate. Not to mention I can load the 06 for anything from varmints to moose. |

If you are not comfortable taking long shots, 300 yards plus, then I would stick with what you are used to. I have used a 30-06 for every elk I have taken. The longest was 350 yards. 180 grain or high ... |
