well this time around we did get to let some blood out. first up I shot a hare with the wee china girl (just because) and then we carried on and tidied up a station hut ready for our planned easter hunt, we cut some forewood and stacked in in the dry and then put some holes in a cardboard box as its been awhile since Ive had any quality trigger time. got the old .270 out and fired a few rounds . Id forgotton why I dont like to shoot her prone Embarassed . never mind the box was dead so all was well.
after lunch we went for a drive up to where my buddy had seen a stag the other week...up in the misty clouds we went it sure was nice to be sitting in a warm cab while gaining altitude. we got up to where the stag had been spotted and grabbed rifles and binos and wandered about 200 yards out to a knob for a look. nothing was seen so I cupped my hands and let out a lusty roar.... well 2 sheep up the hill further baaed and my buddy had to say it Embarassed "they are calling your name miiiike miiike Embarassed Embarassed "
well that just wasnt called for Embarassed
I looked down and said well what about those 2 hinds heading this way then as 2 had just appeared out of the scrub Very Happy they stopped and looked up to thier left...."what are they looking at?" asked my buddy
"A stag so I better shoot it" says I Very Happy
well I let the .270 loose and got a nice solid wallop sound back as the stag walked into the scrub.
we didnt have a knife or bag between us so bro in law sat and watched while we went back to get them.
we came back and headed down to where he was standing. well the lads did I sat and kept area under watch. out pops the stag so I called for lads to sit and plastered stag twice more.
yip he went over then!!! a good 500 yrd carry up to the truck Very Happy Very Happy .
my tea is ready so will finish this tale soon.

ok tea over...puku is contented
where was I????
ahh yes the carry out
well being a stubborn old hua I chopped the hindquarters off for me to carry and took both front quarters off with rib meat and backsteaks intact on the skin and put them in our 2 day bags for the fellas to carry, bro in law took my rifle aswell as his and my other buddy took the wee head(9 small points) I struggled under the load and off up the hill we went with many stops on the way(it was heavy and uphill and Im not 20 years old any more, havent been for 20 years) gee it felt great to drop that load onto the deck of the truck and enjoy a roibos tea from the flask.
well a nice quiet drive down the track and homeward was interupted when I said to my buddy"you want to shoot a thar dont you?" he keeps on driving
again I say"you want to shoot a thar dont you???"
"yes" was the reply finally
"well stop the bloody truck and shoot those 2 standing just 75 yrds away then"says a now grinning Elvis!!!!
yip thats right there was 2 of them just 75 yrds away looking at us well the scramble for rifles didnt faze them but when the old 30/30 jack handle got cranked the noise started them running. I let the lads get a couple of shots in first them joined in and well.... lets just say they both fell over and got to join the stag for a ride on the deck of the truck too!!!!
so our freezer is now full of prime venison and the lads will get some lovely roasts of young thar to keep them from starving.
all in all a very very good day had by all.

Elvis you lucky bugger...I'm green with envy mate...a brilliant hunt.

I take it your first shot on the stag didn't do the job mate? Did the subsequent shots ruin much meat?

Running Thar...2 shots, two kills...well done mate, although as Gelan says...pics or it didn't happen mate. Laughing

Those two sheeps seemed to recognise your "mating call" mate...even your buddy noticed that. wtf wtf Shocked Shocked Laughing Laughing Laughing

typical...mind in the gutter.. thar skin is salted . 1st shot went high in neck and another through chest last one exited through rump and caused a bit of mess but we eat right up to the bullet hole so all is good. 25-30 litres of steak and 40 ltrs of stew/mince, we are intending to try making sausages too.

took a mate of my Brothers out today up to our usual haunt..North Island bush hunter who has shot a few really good red stags..longest shot 16mtrs!!!
got to our spot and I put Him in front as he was the guest..opened our eyes and gave a whole new appreciation to the area we hunt to see this fellas eyes light up at the fresh sign and ample deer tucker..we got up to our "lookout spot" and stood there looking over at clearing 250yards away when we heard something break branches etc down below us, mate was keen as to get down into ferns and see if he could get onto it.."nah Mate lets just wait and see if it pops out" says myself..well bugga me sideways if thats not just what happened hind walks out into clearing Mate lifts rifle to shoot "wait mate lie down" says shocked guide mate lays down deer then turns broadside on BOOOOM goes 7mm/08 and deer does big lurch and heads straight down hill into scrub..after we watched for a bit we headed over and found hind within 15yards of where she was a quick finishing shot and we boned her out in no time with two of us on knives and carry out was piece of cake..back at wagon by 10;00
to say he was rapped with hunt was under statement..Tuesday we will head out after a wallaby or 2.

Sounds like a great mornings hunt mate. Well done...now for some wallabies. Venison and wallaby sausages are brilliant mate, you should give them a try.
