Any good or bad about this cartridge?
Have heard lots about the little .17 but can't get a consensus.
What do youall think about it?
Any information is appreciated
Thanks

I too have considered buying the Mach II
Everyone I’ve talked with seems to have more knowledge and experience with it’s bigger brother the .17 HMR.

I don't know much about either but are we talking about the .17 HMR or the .17 Mach 2? The HMR is based on the .22 Magnum and the Mach 2 is based on the Long Rifle. Looks like the HMR is about 400 ft/sec faster than the Mach 2 with the same weight bullet.

i have an nef sportster with 3 barrels, 22lr, 22mag, and 17hmr. the 17 hmr will stay moa at 100yds (tough tast for either the lr or the mag to do)IF AND ONLY IF there is NO wind. 17gr bullet, even at 2550 fps, very wind sensetive. the 20 gr bullet at 2300fps dose'nt fair too much better. the 17 VERY exp;osive, on ground hogs, seldem get an exit hole. mpbr is about 160 yards with the 17. at that range you will get a few crawl offs. hope you find this info useful. diesel

I'm not sure if the hmr is the same one that I used to have. I always called it a 17 Rem. It's the cartridge similar to a 222, but with a 17 grain bullet.
If we're on the same page, I can tell you a little about this one. I bought one to shoot coyotes about 10 years ago.
I was deer hunting with my 270 one day and took the 17 with me. About the time I was ready to go back to the house, a small doe walked out about 40 yards from me. I thought I'd take her to make some sausage with a wild hog that I shot the day before. I put the crosshairs between her eyes and pulled the trigger. The bullet hit a twig about 10 feet from the barrel and exploded. Not a fragment made it to the doe.
An oil pipeline company gave me about 20 highline poles that were running along the edge of the ranch. I was going to cut them up to use as corner posts. These poles had a quarter inch cable running along it, at the top. I think it was used as a grounding system. Anyway, I was afraid that if I cut one down, the rest of them would snap off, being brought down by the attached cable. I decided to shoot the cable down with the 17. I just drove along the line shooting the cable down. It worked great for that.
I took it out one day to see how the 17 grain bullet would act in a 10 to 15 mph cross wind. I can tell you one thing; you would have trouble hitting a 5 gallon bucket with that much cross wind. The bullet is just too light. On a calm day, you could light matches with it. It was a fun gun to shoot, but it has its limitations.

Cary, the .17 HMR and .17 Mach 2 are rimfires, based on the .22 Winchester Magnum and .22 Long Rifle respectively.

Varmint hunting with the 17 HMR is just good fun, 100yards head shots on any light game has instant results, you won’t find an exits hole nor much of the bullet as it explodes real well. Does not make much noise so you can poke around close to home. I have the 17 HMR made by Anschutz with a 12 power Leupold sitting on to. It’s just so easy to use off hand and its super accurate of a rest. When the wind picks up just pick up a bigger calibre say a 338 Laupa, or have more fun and aim off. Less than 70 yards you find it will shoot well enough to hit unless it a gale then go get the Laupa.

The .17 Remington came about in the early 70's and is based upon the .223 case.

Aren't the shells for the .17 HMR and .17 Mach 2 about as expensive as some center fire cartridges?
I do my plinking with an SKS (7.62x39mm). It costs about as much to shoot as a 22 long rifle.

Thanks Guys,
HMR2 is the smaller of the two, .17cal and .17hmr2, Right!
I read several years ago about .17 Havalina Bee and others that were real killers for a small bullet, This is NOT that .17 for sure, A friend has a new Savage .17HMR2 for $350.00 w/ Scope, Been shot 25 or 30 times and he wants to sell it, cause he hasn't used it, I go from .22,. 22 mag up thru 300 Win Mag. Thought this might be a FUN gun I could afford to shoot a lot......
since I retired this year and limited as to what and when I can shoot,LOL
Thanks again and any other thoughts would be appreciated.
Bob

Torasperry, there is a .17 HMR and a .17 Mach 2 but I can't find any reference to a .17 HMR2, except when someone was pointing out confusion between the HMR and the Mach 2. Please make sure you know which you are getting, they are NOT interchangable.

I have to agree that the 17HMR does not like any wind at all, but on a very calm day there are not many calibers out there that will be more accurate. I have a Marlin 917V heavy barrel and I've put a penny (.01) on a target at 100 yrds and put 3 of 3 through the coin with them all touching. I would say the .17hmr is very very accurate. If you don't believe me then get a 17HMR and find out for yourself. It is a great cartridge for small varmints like gophers. Some claim it to be adequate for coyotes, but I would prefer something bigger myself.

I'll stick with my 22 LR's in rimfire. Besides already haveing them I also know how they shoot and the 17 remington didnt impress me much when I had one, so I doubt the 17 rimfires are going to set the world on fire for me.
Just my thoughts. Im sure they'll work fine for some folks.

Here's a Trajectory chart i have to show what the 17 HMR & Mach II does against the 22lr. I reviewed the HMR and decided to purchase one myself, i have yet to head to the range to test it out but with the accuracy that is so common with this round i think i will be very happy with it. If i could have found the Mach II with a decent price i might have gone with that since the performance isn't far off from the magnum and ammunition is a tad cheaper.
