Hi!

I am searching a well-proven load for a .22 Savage Hi Power / 5,6x52R with 70 gr .227 Hornady SP bullet and using Hodgdon H322 powder!

Can someone please supply me a corresponding load data recommendation?

Many thanks in advance!

BR

Welcome to Hunting Nut ActiveMike, I had to go back to my #3 COTW to get data for the 22 savage hi-power.

I won't list all since you are interested in the 70gr Hornady and back then it shows loads of:

IMR 3031 with 70gr bullet behind 26grs of 3031, table shows mv of 2850fps and me of 1253.

Now from looking at Hodgdons burn rate tables, they have IMR 3031 listed at the 78th spot where H322 is at #74 telling us that H322 is very slighly faster in burning rates.

HODGDON BURN RATES

I would say the powders are almost equal as far as burn rates. The other Hodgdon powder they list is the slower H-380 for 55gr bullets.

Best bet is to attach a translator to your web browser and search some German web forums. Just thought of something else, we have a member from Belgium (Aloysius) you could send him a PM, as the caliber is more a Euro. cal. Here's about all I found on Chuck Hawks site and it doesn't mention your powder;

The High-Power is currently factory loaded in Europe as the 5.6x52R. Norma 5.6x52R factory loads are imported into the US. The Norma factory load uses a 71 grain soft point bullet at a muzzle velocity (MV) of 2789 fps with muzzle energy (ME) of 1227 ft. lbs. Norma trajectory figures show the following: +2.1" at 100 yards, 0 at 200 yards, and -9.9" at 300 yards.

The 5.6x52R can be reloaded, and the Hornady Handbook, Third Edition has data for reloaders. Data for European shooters is available in European reloading manuals. IMR 3031 is recommended as a good powder for the .22 High-Power. Hornady makes a 70 grain Spire-Point .227" bullet (BC .288, SD .194) specifically for the 5.6x52R, which they describe as a "varmint and small game round." Hornady's test rifle for developing the following loads was bolt action Mauser 66 and they advise that for old lever action rifles their maximum loads should be reduced by at least 10%.

Hornady data shows that their 70 grain Spire Point can be driven to a MV of 3100 fps with 28.3 grains of N203 powder, 27.4 grains of IMR 3031 powder, or 27.6 grains of N201 powder. The trajectory of that load looks like this: +1.6" at 100 yards, 0 at 200 yards, and -7.5" at 300 yards. These loads used RWS cases and Federal 210 primers.

Oh and
welcome to
the Nut!
Suz

Suz, don't expect too much from me Smile
In my DEVA reloading manual (WIEDERLADEN Vorbereitung und Praxis) I cannot find a 5.6x52 R. They list the 5.6x35 R Vierling (but that's to small for a 70 grs bullet), 5.6x50 Magnum, 5.6x50 R Magnum, 5.6 x 57 (R) and the 5.6x61 SE vom Hofe.
I'm afraid the last 4 are much more stronger than the 5.6x52 R. I will try to look it up in some old reloading manuals.

And I did find some data in an old (1988) leaflet from Kemira (the Vihtavuori-company) and in my opinion that 26 grs IMR 3031 behind a 70 grs bullet might be rather hot.
In this old manual they give 3 RWS-bullets of 71 grs and they load them with:
23.8 grs N135 for 835 m/s (2740 fps) - 2900 bar (max is 3000 bar)
25.6 grs N140 for 865 m/s (2840 fps) - 2900 bar
30.2 grs N160 for 830 m/s (2723 fps) - 2900 bar

looking at these data I wouldn't take the H322, I would try Varget, H380 or H414 (or your IMR4350). I think such small caliber asks for rather slow - medium powder with burning rates N135 to N140. And when they give 25.6 grs N140 as a max load for a 71 grs bullet, I would hesitate to use 26 grs IMR3031 behind a 70 grs...

You da man Aloys, thanks for the try, that was nice. Hopefully he's not confused. From what I could find it's mostly a German caliber, but that was what I got from some German (I think) forums. I googled the 5.6x52R and got some German looking web sites.

my Nick Harvey manual 3rd edition has loads for 70grn projectile using RE-7 IMR4198 IMR4895 AR2206 IMR3031 AND IMR 4320 for savage model 66 rifle if you want this info let me know. I use ar2206 for everything its a good powder and easy to get.

Welcome aboard ActiveMike. H322 powder is actually a Hogdon labelled Aussie powder called AR2219 by the manufacturer.

The manufacturer does not list this powder for the .22 Savage Hi Power (5.6 x 52R), however it does list two other powders: AR2207 - marketed by Hogdon as H4198 and AR2208 - marketed by Hogdon as Varget (one of the most versatile powders I know of).

The load data for these two powders is for the 70gn bullet and is as follows:
____________________________________________________________________
Bullet Weight...Powder..................Powder Weight...Velocity....Barrel Length
(Grains).........................................(grains)...........(fps)

70gn.............AR2207 (H4198)..........21.5gn............2900................24"

70gn.............AR2208 (Varget)..........24.5gn............2900................24"
_____________________________________________________________________

As with all loads, start approximately 10% below max and work up, checking for pressure signs as you go.

Hopefully this will solve your reloading problems mate.

Cheers, Vince

Vince, are you sure H4198 = AR2207? That's even a faster burning rate than H322. In the Hodgdon line it's coming close to H110, a powder I use for .44 RM magnum loads and for some reduced loads in rifle cartridges.
Or somebody is mixing up data, or I'm loosing my feelings on powders. Both cases call for Miss Prudence...

@Suz: strange but when I Googled that caliber I got a czech film where they shoot a fox (liska - but my typewriter doesn't have the funny accents).

Boy I see how you are Aloysius, the load I give is too hot but you said nothing of Suz's load which is even hotter at 27.4grs of imr 3031. Very Happy Very Happy

Also Vince is correct H4198 = AR2207, you can see the relabeled powers HERE

Omini, solly, didn't know I was allowed to have a look at Suz's load Smile
And as always: some like it hot, others can handle it all...

And I know you can do a lot with your IMR3031 which is comparable to our PCl507, a powder develloped for the 7.62x51 Nato, but also very good in a lot of different calibers from small to the big ones. But still: why take a small caliber and push it till it performs as a big one? I prefer the other way around.

Hornady Fourth Edition manual has loads for the .22 Savage High Power using IMR4198, RL-7 and IMR3031. Since the cartridge is based on the .25-35 I checked loads for it too. 23.5 grains of H322 is a MAX load for the .25-35 with a 75 grain bullet. Based on that info I wouldn't start with a load as hot as you've proposed! Smaller bore will give you higher pressure. Maybe you should back it down to about 20.0 and start there. And that is assuming you have a bolt action. Lever guns loads should be 10% lighter, according to Hornady.
