Coffee is CHEAP!

People like the ones who wrote that article are idiots. They think the world revolves around going to Starbucks and spending 7$ for a extra chocolate, with mint flavor mocha latte with skim milk and foam on top. It actually costs more for the milk/cream or sugar that people want then the coffee itself.

Its no more expensive then tea, and actually takes less coffee grind to make a cup then it does to make a cup of tea when making ground filtered coffee ie "French" coffee to most of the world.

Plus who the hell drinks Colombian to care if they stop producing coffee? Its coffee for people who want to drink bland, over roasted generic coffee. Actually the Vietnamese make better coffee then most in my opinion, the French taught them well. Very Happy

To put it into perspective, Vietnam makes 2.5 billion pounds of coffee a year, which is the second largest producer of coffee, Brazil being first with a staggering 5.7 BILLION pounds of coffee. Shocked

Colombia only produced 9 million bags, equivalent to only 1.2 billion pounds (each bag is 132 pounds). They are 3rd in the world, but compared to the over all production they are still relatively a small portion.

Quote::
According to the Composite Index of the London-based coffee export country group International Coffee Organization the monthly coffee price averages in international trade had been well above 100 US cent/lb during the 1970s and 1980s, but then declined during the late 1990s reaching a minimum in September 2001 of just 41.17 US cent per lb and stayed low until 2004.

The reasons for this decline included a collapse of the International Coffee Agreement of 1962-1989 with Cold War pressures, which had held the minimum coffee price at USD$1.20 per pound. Moreover, the expansion of Brazilian coffee plantations and Vietnam's entry into the market in 1994 when the United States trade embargo against it was lifted added supply pressures.

Currently, for a 37,500 pound "lot" on the commodity exchange, you'd expect to pay if you bought today 2.37$ per pound. It has actually started to fall compared to the 2.70$ or so per pound in the spring/late winter months ago.

Big chains, like StarBucks, Second Cup, Kryspy Kreme, Tim Horton's, generally have multiple year contracts. So their costs are spread over time, but lets say 2.37$ per pound.

One pound makes about 256 ounces of coffee, which is equal to about 18 large cups of coffee (14 ounces each). So at 2.37 cents, it comes out to about 12.5 cents per large cup of coffee produced.

Once you factor in the fact that a "large" cup of coffee sold at these "expensive" stores only generally have about a medium cups worth of coffee, your looking at 9 cents for that 7$ hippie drink in actual coffee costs. The cups they serve the coffee in cost more then the coffee itself at that price point! Shocked

No kidding...When did you read that? Just now?

Let's see...I've been drinking Arabica bean coffee sense I was, oh let's say, 15. Became a coffee taste conisour by 16 and have known thatthe Arabica was a species and not from a particular country. I'm a month shy of 69 now. (Shut-up Stovey. Don't say it).

Heh, I figured you would, well happy birthday in advance. Smile

Just saying, don't think we have anything to worry about because we can buy it from many countries in the world.

And you forgot Hawaii on your list. They grow a variety of Arabica called Kona (Coffea Arabica) coffee. One of the finest and most expensive Arabicas.

A cup of Kona is best served hot with a short shot of good scotch added. I would recommend Johnny Walker Black because of it's prevalence in most bars in Hawaii...

Most Kona coffees bought here are a blend and not so good. Pure Kona is the only way.
