Hi guys. I've just got hold of a .22" Anschutz single shot rimfire. My problem is that the round won't go in quite far enough for the bolt to close and lock. I've had the bolt and extractor out and cleaned it all but that didn't help. The round seems to stick out about 0.030" further than it should. The base of the round fits into the bolt face ok with the bolt removed. I don't want to slam the bolt forward and drive the round home - not good for the sitting room wall!
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Delboy, If you bought it new, I'd be headed back to the seller with it. If it's used, I'd still be headed back to the seller with it. Someone needs to make it right. Have you tried another brand of ammo with it? Just a thought. I wouldn't slam the bolt home either. That will only create more problems than you already have.
Good Luck!
Cheers, Yotebuster

Hi Joe, it's a LR - which is what I'm trying to load (in actual fact it's marked Long Shot - never come across that one before but assume it's the same as LR) but thanx anyways.
Yote - it's just an old banger that I picked up for around a hundred bucks, but returning it to the shop would be a nightmare as the place is 150 miles away and you can't post firearms here. It would have to go to my local dealer and be shipped by courier from there to where I bought it. Buying guns here is not as easy (or as cheap) as on your side of the pond. I've seen .22LR ammo advertised over there for a couple of dollars per 100, over here it's around $8 for the same and don't even talk about centrefire ammo........... .243 = $2 a ROUND.
Del.

Hi Delboy...If the rifle barrel doesn't have any rifling, it may just be a pest control piece that shoots .22 shotshells. Shotshells I think are longer than
.22lr but are crimped. Check for an obtruction.

Also, Anshutz .22lr single shot rifles in the target class, engage the lead bullet into the rifling as in the 1400 series etc. but all rifles I've come across are clearly marked .22 LR .

Best solution would be to chamber cast using Cerrosafe..

Regards

Could it be chambered for the 22 Long?

I believe the 22 Long is the same case as the Long Rifle but with a shorter 29 grain bullet than the LR's 40 grain. Maybe the longer bullet of the LR won't allow the bolt to close?

The 22 Long is essentially obsolete but at least CCI still sells it.

Good advice - don't guess.

I have a neat little 22 Short with a wire frame that was my father's when he was a boy. While I was away at school, somebody jammed a LR in it, fired it and ruined the chamber.....

Gidday delboy. I'm with shootist. First up I would do a thorough inspection of the chamber and throat of the rifle to make sure there is no obstruction in there like an old piece of case etc. Then I would make a cast of the chamber and measure it against a LR round.

Apart from that I don't know of anything more you could do apart from take it to a gunsmith along with your first born.

Thanx for all the help guys, I think Waumo wins the cee-gar though. I have now figured it out that it is a long and not a long rifle. I was able to buy it as the rifling had been stripped out, therefore making it a shotgun in legal terms. I have wanted a "rifle" for a while now but have never had the time to get one ............... Sounds strange? Let me explain ..... In order to get a licence for a rifle I first have to join a club (nearest one 10 miles/ 1 hour drive from me) as a probationer and go at least once a week for six months. I can then join as a full member. This will enable me to get a licence - but only to use the rifle at that club. After another year I can then take the rifle to other "authorised shooting places" where I have advance permission to shoot. Now, whilst I can get hold of LR ammo from friends - I have got NO chance of getting any Long so I've shot myself in the foot so to speak. I am now stuck with poking a heavy air rifle pellet in the barrel and chambering a long blank to push it! Still, that's better than nothing! I have ordered (at hideous expense) some CCI shotshells with the plastic end caps and was going to put a .22 lead ball in them after emptying out the shot. I have now discovered that .22 lead balls don't exist in this life and am now totally buggered! Might try fixing the pellets onto the blanks with a spot of adhesive to make loading a bit easier. Tell me, would any of YOU go these lengths just to shoot illegally? We have such rediculous firearms laws here it makes me want to cry. For instance: One of our esteemed Prime Ministers had a law passed to forbid expanding ammunition.................... shortly after that, he passed a law banning deer shooting with anything but expanding ammunition. Try and work that one out!!!!! Anyway guys, thanx again for all your help.
Del.

Delboy, far be it for me to suggest you do anything illegal, however.....has the thought of making cast projectiles crossed your mind? There is any number of moulds out there for .22" projectiles.... food for thought there mate. If you have access to a lathe and/or milling machine make your own mould and sizing die if needed.

Another thought is Ramset rounds. Don't know what size or "calibre" they are but from memory they are pretty close to .22, and they come in different lengths.

I have heard all sorts of stories about guys bringing in booze and cigarettes by the truck load from the continent....why not some .22L? A 500 round brick would keep you going for a while. Just a thought.

As I said, far be it from me to suggest that you do anything illegal...;)

Good Luck, Vince

delboy, sorry to hear about the laws over there.I get truly mad just hearing things like that.Anyway if I was in your situation I believe I would get a hold of a #1 wire guage drill bit and lengthen your chamber slightly so that it would chamber long rifle cartridges. It would be wise to check it for safety afterwards by fastening rifle tight pointed at a safe backstop and firing some rounds standing back pulling trigger with rope.I would certainly think that the anschutz action would be plenty strong enough for the long rifle cartridges, but better safe than sorry.I know this suggestion might make a gunsmith shudder but your accuracy is going to be pretty poor anyway without rifling. This would be a cheap fix. When I was a kid I made a 22 pistol barrel by drilling out a piece of steel with a #2 bit for the bore and chambering it with a#1 bit which measures .228.Good luck.

I have thought about that Roklok and as to it's accuracy, my longest shot would probably be around 20-30 yards anyway, so what the hell...........
Vince, nice idea mate about the brick, only problem is that they would be too expensive. Over here you could get between twelve months and two years for smuggling in a containerload of illegal immigrants - a brick of 500 rounds would qualify for between five and seven years. I s**t you not!
Del. (besides, .22 long is now obsolete as far as I know Sad )

...We use a "Ramset" tool to push studs through ships hulls to be able to mount flanges so we can pump the oil off the ship. Mostly those that have sunk. But the calibre of ours is .38 instead of .22. Ours will drive a steel threaded stud through 1/2 inch steel plate...Heavy loads....

Sounds like an overpowered version of my Hilti nail gun. That will push a nail 4" into hard cast concrete and is also .38 blank powered. Crap accuracy though and holding in the safety lever is a bitch!
