I figured that a horse is about as exspensive as a large dog and a little more expensive then a kid. Good hay $13 to $14 a bale and one bale lasts one horse about 7 days. 50# Senior Equine (Like me, old horses) lasts about 2 weeks. Shoeings every 8 to 10 weeks $90 per horse. Vet calls to the ranch once a year (providing the horses don't do something stupid during the year) for 4 in1 shot, west nile shot and physical including blood workup for coggins $100 per horse. This doesn't even cover the cost of boots, saddles, head stalls/reins, saddle pads/blankets, maintenance for all this not to mention the other prefinalia to maintain healthy horses...Then there is the necessary land needed for the care and feeding of these beasts of burden. I sometimes feel that I'm the beast of burden for them.... How'my doin' Jack? This figure about right for you?
I DID mention "old horses" so I'm still on topic, I guess...

Yeah you bout figgered it , we be the beasts , and they lay back smilin' at us ..
We use the 1200 # rolls , at about $40 a roll , we pick up , regular square bales are around $4.00 for good hay .. Purina Omolene 100 is $16.00/cwt ..
Shoeing is around $60.00/hoss/2 months .. Ole woman used to werk for our vet , we been lucky though , no problems to amount to anything in years .. So our vet trips are reasonable ..
Then there is all the other stuff you mentioned as well ..
Jack

Jack, Bushy, either of you two ever thought of getting a Harley? No hay, no vet, no s**t!

I like the wind in my face, Delboy, but not that much. And I would hate to have to hold my horse up at a stop light

Looks like we have a few graybeards here. I was 61 last December and can still wear my Air Force uniform from 1962. All the best...

I could wear my Navy uniform up until I ws 58. Then I crashed and burned by "Unauthorized Dismount" and quit smoking at the same time. Now I have a bit of a gut...

All you guys can kid Bushmaster and the rest all you want, but they are the ones I would like to hunt and fish with. You learn a whole lot more than trying to go it alone, and you get some great stories thrown in. I am sitting here on a dreary Sunday afternoon, scaning the slides that my Grandfather took as he was teaching my brother and I how to fish up at Rock Creek, and June Lake. It is interesting to see some of these posts as I am thinking that some of these were taken 35 to 40 years ago. I am going to be 43 Next Deer season.

Gidday Bushy, an "unauthorised dismount" eh...been there, done that...and it bloody hurts. Had a 4 legged of road carrier shie then pig root on me on a beach one time. I landed in an uncivilised heap in front of him. I'm sure he was laughing his guts out.
I still wear my old Army uniform, but it depends what year it was issued in.... Joined the Army at 25 yrs old and 183 lb, went down to 170 lb, discharged at a healthy 178 lb....now I'm 231 lb. Not good.
The older I get, the better I used to be.
Cheers, Vince

Hi gang,
At 69 I'm probably the graybeard of the group or close to it. I probably shoot more today than 20 years ago although I hunt less. The old legs won't carry me all that far now, I'm heavy into accurac shooting and enjoy it even more than hunting. To each his own I guess. Best wishes.
