The past four or five months my wife and I have been helping a very close and dear friend as she made her vision come to fruition. She made it her purpose in life to open a facility to help Veterans with PTSD. Through a lot of elbow grease from hundreds of volunteers who worked countless hours she was able to turn an old women's correctional facility into a campus for veterans, licensed by the state of Minnesota. All of the staff right now are totally volunteer until the rest of the paperwork is completed and the funding actually comes through.
Each room at the All of the residents rooms were donated by individual volunteers or families. They took their chosen room from a dilapidated state to ready for a veteran to live in. The rooms have to be scraped, plaster patched, painted, new furniture, and decorations. Each sponsor made their room as if it was their own son or daughter that was going to live in it.
This project has gained nationwide exposure. My wife has spent almost every day at the nest for over two months as the food service coordinator. At some future date the staff positions will be funded as full time positions but that is a date yet to be determined.
All of the personnel at the nest have a close relationship with someone in the military.
Here are a couple of links to the Eagles Healing nest.

This is something that I really believe in having been a soldier and helping my soldiers through some very tough times.

You guys rock!
That is a very noble and honorable thing to be involved in.
My grandfather suffered from PTSD after WW2 and it affected him for his whole life.
Its great to see facilities of this nature being created....what gets me really wild is the lack of Govt expenditure on Vets once they get home....all good to use and abuse in war zone but to forget them after the storm has passed is just wrong.
Keep the awesome work going.
Radar

A damn good idea and a worthy one.
One would think that a lot more official effort and resources would be directed at PTSD, its not like our countries have never been to war before.
Its a long term hidden problem that has taken many who have survived combat.
Well done and my best wishes to all involved.

Thanks guys. This is a problem I struggled with. I visit with the guys at the nest a couple three or four evenings a week. Any things I can help them with makes me feel like I am giving back.

Wiersay, that is a magnificent idea and facility. As both Radar and Pete said, not enough is done by the Govt to assist vets after they (the Govt) have sent them to war and bought them home "broken".

I would love to see a facility like this over here...there are so many that really need it, and it is a healing facility, not a sanitized survival facility like a Psychiatric Hospital.

Cheers, Vince

well its a funny thing cause as a young un I would hear that so n so relative was off to Hamner for rehab and then I came down south and its a major holiday destination and a great get away.. had me quite puzzled till I went for a weekend of r n r with SWMBO and got to see the place. Queen Mary was a peacefull place to just walk around a great pity it is no longer running.

It can be resurrected mate...just a matter of the Govt deciding that it is a worthwhile venture, and that will only happen if Veterans groups get behind it and lobby the Govt.

Thanks Arron it truly is a wonderful place. There are new vets showing up every week. There is still so much to do around there as they prepare the next building to house residents.
