WAM (wait-a-minute), you are suggesting steam pressure!

Bingo. However remember that you can still get a steam-powered "kaboom" when something lets go.

Well, the barrel was definitely cold and I needed gloves to handle it. I placed the steel rod back down the barrel and the bullet sunk in on the first whack. A few more smacks and the cartridge still was solidly stuck in the chamber. You can see the end of the rod flared more and actually split at about 8 o'clock. It flared to the barrel diameter and dragged all the way down the barrel as it was extracted.

With the bullet unseated and on the powder stack, I filled it with water and capped it off. Here is the barrel ready to go into the freezer. I sure hope Round 3, using expanding ice, unseats the bullet. If it doesn't, I may get just a wee bit angry.

Who wants to bet on which will move first - a lead bullet held in place by a hole that is two calibers smaller or that stuck case? There is water in the case and if that expands at the same rate as the ice... I'm thinking lead is softer and plastic enough to swage into the 30 caliber hole.

Hmm, once the projectile sunk into the case I would flood the barrel with WD40.
1. WD40 disable the primer and made the powder no longer brisance.
2, leaving it there a few days and it would work its way between the case and chamber thus facilitating its removal.

gelandangan, with the bullet set back into the case, I did flood the barrel with liquid wrench penetrating oil and let it sit upright for over a week. This may be why I couldn't get the primer to ignite during Round 1 and 2. However, I've read that WD40 and oil is not a sure way to inert a primer. A few of them will still ignite.

Slim, yes I agree they will burn, but the would be no longer brisance in other words they would burn much much slower with a lot less impact energy.

Paul, this is a great question. What will move first? Let's make it a contest.

Obviously, I was betting on the case moving.

A fact to consider. When water freezes, its expands 8 to 9%. If the water column is 14" long inside the barrel, it should grow about 1.25 inches. This makes me think that something has got to move.

What do others think will move first?

Everyone chime in with their answer and I'll wait to open the freezer until I come home from church list afternoon.

Maybe fill it with water and freeze it? if you cap off the bore and gas port as described the expanding Ice will push pretty hard too.

BTW, it was Dawgdad's idea to freeze it. Dawgdad, what do you think will move first?

wtf I understand that ammonia likes to eat copper, and that it does not attack steel as rapidly as copper,or for brass use vinegar-however I don't know what kind of reaction that vinegar has to steel.Just some thoughts.I believe that I would go to a local welding supply store and invest in some "tig"welding rods of the diameters that would be slightly smaller than your bore sizes in both stainless and brass......For future reloading mishaps and it is easier on the muzzle and bore than a steel cleaning rod Shocked

Agree totally. The steel rod would most likely would have worked initially if the forward assist had not been used to jam the case further into the chamber. So far, I have only seen situation where use of the forward assist only made things worse.

Just got home from church. I was at least waiting for Bushy to chime in before I opened the freezer. Maybe he ran out of pop-corn mid-week.

Pkslinger, you didn't even vote for what you thought was going to move? So much for you guys being joining in on the entertainment. No KABOOM (very fortunate as you will later see). But both PaulS and I guessed incorrectly,.

Paul, the bullet did get pushed into the muzzle brake a bit as it had no tension on it when it thawed. However, the bullet is a lead-alloy made by Oregon Trails.

After I drilled and tapped the primer pocket for a 1/4-20 bolt (RCBS stuck case extractor kit), here is the extracted bullet. I initially thought there was a split neck from the case fired before it. Instead of throwing the bullet out, I cut it up and inspected further. That's not the neck from the case before it. That is actually the steel cleaning rod used to try and knock the case out. It pushed the bullet into the case then flared around the bullet then split. Man, that case didn't want to come out of that chamber.

Thanks for the freezing suggestion, Dawgdad! And everyone else's exchange of ideas. Very helpful in coming to a successful conclusion (assuming the barrel will still shoot straight).
