Here's a real 'feel good' pic for all the old, and young, squids amongst us...

U.S. naval force approaches the shores of Lingayen, Pangasinan Philippines

Very cool pict, thanks for sharing!

I just ran across that picture on a different site, it had the caption:

Thanks Vince and Dallan for the pic and the detail.

I picked it up from a group I frequent on Facebook...WW II Pictures.

A great pic of the Mighty Mo 'shouting' in anger. Note towards the upper right of the pic...the rounds are caught in flight on their way to their intended target...outstanding.

2690 fps, 1900 to 2700 lbs, range 24 miles = a very bad day on the receiving end.
Great photo.

I think they said it takes only 16 seconds to reload. At max range a round can take 20 seconds, so it's more than possible it can keep 18 rounds in the air. IMPRESSIVE

This must be where the term bristling with armament came from.

She was definitely a war queen! I always liked the idea of being able to launch a small car 24 miles. It's even better when you remember that each round is filled with high explosives or other good stuff. (unless you are receiving - then it is very bad stuff)

...18 rounds of pure hell, in the air and inbound. Shocked Shocked Shocked I would not even like to think about what it would be on the ground, knowing they are inbound and knowing what the devastation will be like.

Imagine if they turned the rear turret as well...9 guns... Surprised Shocked the mind boggles.

Gelan, I used to end up with a semi circle of shockwave ripples in the dirt on the ground in front of me when I used to shoot IHMSA with my 10 inch barrel TC Contender in 30.30 WIN. It always fascinated me how impressive the shock wave was...and it was nothing compared to what the Mighty Mo puts out.

I think from memory nobody was allowed on deck when they were firing the main armament because of the effects of the shock wave. Maybe one of the old sailors on here could confirm that.
