I don't know... after the first arrow you are going to need to be very fast and very accurate.

I always heard that they are the smartest game to hunt.

Hmmm...hey, here's an idea...get Aloys over with his "Dead Eye Dick" air rifle shooting. Either that or put a grid down that you can electrify with the flick of a switch...drop them all in one go. Laughing Laughing Laughing

Seriously though, they do look rather good I must admit. Having wildlife visit your yard really is pretty special.

Vince, don't know an airgun would be OK. It's not so often that I can get a second chance on things with feathers because they seem to be more prudent than their hairy friends. I would suggest to use such a 'thunderbuks'. You know that short blackpowder smoothbore with its trompet-shape barrel. When doing allright, I might get 6 or 7 with 1 shot...
and it's possible that the rest doesn't want to run because of the thick mist cloud that's surrounding them...
why do I start thinking about a potato-gun now? Such 'airrifle' might also do the job when loaded with the right stuff...

Thanks for all the advice, however these particular turkeys don't need to worry about being dinner. They have become sorta like pets, they come by a couple tomes a day and sometimes I can even sneak into the gang. I suspect that if I were to start culling the rafter they might not be so friendly, same for the deer who come in the evening. There are plenty of others around here if I were hungry and or healthy enough to go get them. Just thought you'd like to see them.

Lester,
As long as you haven't named them they can still be food...
Once you name them (anything other than food names) they are pets and have to die of old age.
The steer we named "ribs" was food and we knew it but the bull that we called "Snaggle Puss" was a breeder and never was food. One horn curled up and the other curled down. He was an odd one and didn't like being disturbed in any way.

A friend of mine had domestic turkeys named, at my suggestion, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year. Although the initial idea was that they would be supper at some point they became pets and never did get eaten.

Les, its pretty neat to see the wild critters in the yard! I even enjoyed seeing the vultures that roosted around our house for the past several years but this year they haven't come back, at least not yet. It's kinda neat seeing 80-100 huge birds flying around the place, as long as they don't mess the cars up too bad...

Naming an animal has never kept us from eating it. There was lean Jean, a great hog. Robert. Rex. Randy, and Roberta, some fine domestic rabbit. There was Steve the steer, Kids used to ask what Steve was serving tonight.

I have found several roosting trees while out wandering, they are usually very large old oaks and I have never seen any of our wild turkeys roosting lower than at least 20 off the ground.

You are right about not being able to recognize a roost tree, the ground underneath covered in poop and feathers. I have never seen any birds roosting on gates, or fencing.

Anybody else ever see that behavior in stateside turkeys?
