Howdy. The savage 12fv in 223 i just bought has a 1 in 9 twist. Is this twist better for heavier bullets or lighter ones :?:, I have some 50 grain nosler balistic tips loaded and hope to shoot it this weekend Very Happy . Was curious of opinions on twist rate verses bullet weight for the 223. thanx for any input.

This is Shilen's recommended twist rate for 224 barrels.
8" For bullets heavier than 70 gr.
9" For bullets up to 70 gr.
12" For bullets up to 63 gr.
14" For bullets up to 55 gr.
15"* For bullets up to 55 gr. driven 4,100 fps or more
16"* For bullets up to 55 gr. driven 4,300 fps or more

I have 4 different .224 rifles and all of them have 1 in 14" barrels so I'm only good for up to about 55gr. bullets. I sure wish I had a 1 in 9" twist now to beef up my line a bit. I think the various twist rates are the area most of us know the least about as reloaders. Best wishes.

Cal,

Sounds like a reason to get a Contender. Then you only need about $300 to try a match grade barrel in a new twist.

shrpshtrjoe,
I have a Savage 12fv, I feed it a steady diet of Hornady V-Max 40 gr. bullets behind 27.0 grs. of H335. I can generally put 4 shots in one hole, minus the occasional flyer, and have had almost as good of luck with 50 gr. Noslers. Hope that helps.

Hello grimel,

Don't talk to me about match grade barrels. I have a few Hart SS Match grade barrels from Hart. They are well worth the money in terms of the accuracy they produce, but oooh that $400. a barrel do hurt a bit. I've actually considered a golf cart for lugging those heavy buggers around the woodchuck fields. Best wishes.

Again, from good 'ol Ed's list ....

9" For bullets heavier than 140 gr.
11" For bullets up to 140 gr.

Most standard factory barrels are made to handle the heaviest bullets commonally offered loaded ammo. If I have this right, Remington uses a 1: 9.25" and Savage 1:9.5". I'm not sure about the rest, but would assume they would be close the same.

Your the man Bill. I spoke to soon about the accuracy of my 7/08 Embarassed i think i picked the best group it ever shot and went with that one Embarassed . Now that im getin divorced i spend a lot more time at the range. It's not up to snuff so im tryin to figure it out. The twist rate is 9.25 and it's not shootin the 140s the way it should 1 1/2 -1 3/4 groups with no consistancy( I don't think its the scope ) tried 2 diferent bullets in 140 2 different powders i am about 20,000 off the lands i have some 175gr bullets i don't want to shoot that heavy of a bullet but i am gonna load some just to see if it does better with a heavier bullet. Thanx for the info. If anybody has any thoughts it would be helpful thanx.

Hey Joe, just as a thought, try FL sizing some brass and see what the groups look like. I only loaded for one 7-08 lately and used W760/Fed 210. I don't recall of the top of my head exactly what the charge was.
Just sorta fish'n...
