Ruger M77 in 6mm

My Grandfather has given me his Ruger 6mm, it is in the process of getting shipped to me. I know for a fact it is at least 25yrs old, I inspected it at his house last week and it is in "Like New" condition (he has fired it maybe a 1/2 dozen times ever). I would like to know anybody's experience with the 6mm on deer or similar sized game (I am assuming it is chambered for 6mm remington, won't know until it arrives).

Great White-tail and coyote rifle, the 6mm is a good cartridge, had one for awhile a few years ago.

WileyWapiti, lucky you coming up with a Ruger 6MM. I have shot many whitetails, mulies, and antelope with mine. Have had great success using 90 gr. speers and 95 gr. Nosler BT's. Gave mine away to my son. Miss it dearly. If you ever want to get rid of yours let me know. The Ruger in that age group is a great rifle. Missed mine so bad, having a custom one built. Congrats--tr

yeah, it is funny, because I was looking at a .270 or similar to add to my collection specifically for deer, then my Grandpa gives me this rifle...I am pretty excited to get my hands on it and buy a die set for it and start working up some loads, with luck, I might have it ready for this season.

I have heard many comments from others missing their 6mm having traded it or given it to family. I was thinking of eventually giving it to my son, however, after many of these comments, he may need a .270 instead and dad will hang on to the 6mm.

I would be using it on mulies as well - I see you used some Nosler BT's, ever ran the partitions for this caliber? Just curious, but you give me some ideas for starting bullets..Thanks for the post!

The 6mm Remington has advantages for the reloader over the 243 Win and, given the choice, I prefer the Remington offering. It is a versatile round that will serve well on deer and antelope as well as being a first class coyote/varmint round. But, it doesn't stop there.

With today's premium bullets, the 6mm (either Remington or Winchester) is adequate for elk. Both of my grandsons have taken nice bulls with 243s using the Barnes TSX. Both were one shot kills, both under 100yds with good bullet placement.

Along with the TSX, I have had good experiences with Speer Hot Cores and Nosler Partitions and poor experiences with Ballistic Tips and Sierras, although half a dozen incidents can't be considered conclusive.

Great rifle, great cartridge. Congratulations.

Does the TSX ever stop to amaze me??? I think not! I am really impressed to hear about dropping an elk with the .243, that is a great accomplishment. I recently (over a year ago) switched to the TSX for my .30-06 and have been very impressed both on the range and in the field. I made the switch from partitions to TSX for my .308 as well, it was a tough choice, but you cannot back down from results. I hadn't looked into the TSX for the 6mm yet, but I will. I also want to check out Scirocco(sp?), but I have planned on running some Speer and Partitions, I am pretty stoked and want to put it through some various trials and see where it settles in best.

My nephew has a 6 mm Rem in Rem 600 rifle . He loads 100 gr. Speer Grand Slams and it shoots 3/4" groups every day with that. Great on antelope, deer and coyotes.

Light recoil and accurate. Loves it.

I have a 6mm Rem. in a Remington VLS, and it's a sweetheart, but heavy for toting around. Being a reloader I prefer the 6mm because it has a longer neck than the .243Win. so it's easier to work with. For deer I prefer the Hornady 95gr. SST. I'm quite certain you'll be happy with the caliber. Best wishes.

LOVE my 6mm VLS! Currently using 87grn Vmax on prairie dogs and such. Gonna try some 105Amax for deer this year.

I think you will be happy with your 6mm. A friend of mine took an antelope at 300 yard with a Ruger # 1 in 6mm last year. He was using the 105gr Hdy A-Max, one shot kill. I have 2 6mm Rem Varmint Specials myself. I am currently trying the 75gr V-Max in one of them. I have seen some good velocities, but not the accuracy I was expecting. The rifle & myself are just getting to know each other so I expect it to improve.

The 6mm is a good caliber; the 243, only better. Great for deer with the heavier bullets. I had one, and it was O.K., but I was more interested in my 270 back then.

My son-in-law's father uses it for elk. Sad

He is quite successful, and nobody knows as much as he does about anything!

I witnessed how he gets them one year. He shoots them LOTS... till that little pissant bullet gets to something vital. I haven't hunted with him since.

Good caliber! You won the lottery, it seems. Smile

Sorry, haven't checked this post in a while. A little feedback for you is that I took it out and shot it - many, many times since I originally posted...I love the rifle. I took it out deer hunting this year, but I was being pretty selective on my game and didn't even get a round off in the field. On the range this rifle is a tack driver. I had to make very few adjustments, but the performance is awesome, I think I will keep it!

Good choice. A few years ago, the local gun shop had a Ruger 77 in 6mm Remington and it sat on the used gun rack for a few months. I know the shop owner very well and he gave me a deal. Both of us were happy with the transaction. All the best...

I've harvested several white tails with both the .243 and 6 MM. I love both calibers. Proper bullets and well placed shots will give VERY satisfactory results on deer sized game. I never had the opportunity to hunt anything larger, but given the right shot, I would not hesitate to try mule deer or elk.

I've shot many Mule Deer with the 6mm. When my youngest son turned 12 I gave it to him and bought myself the 25-06. He still uses his 6mm for everything from Coyotes to Mule deer.
