Howdy lazer. That would depend on what type of shooting you intend to do. The main thing is shoot what your comfortable with. I have never used the hilo or aimpoint so not much help on them. Use what you get the best results with.

Depends on what the rifle is worth as a collector or to you as a shooter .
Can you fit it with out drilling and tapping ? Does that matter to you?
Puttting a reciever site on is great . you can still carry the rifle with your hand over the reciever . Were as if you mounted a scope or anything over the top you might not be able to carry it as before .
Vantage of a dot site is every quick to get on target even for old eye's.
My 02 cents

Thank You All. with the B-Square mount I would not have to drill an tap, but the HiLow or Aimpoint would sit off to the side. I plan to hunt Whitetail in WV this year. I hunt Mule deer and Elk out here, I have never hunted Whitetail.

Hi Laser,

I've been hunting with my buddy for 20 years, and he has never used anything but a Win 94 with a peep sight. And he gets his share of whitetails. To each his own....I agree with Joe, use whatever you are confortable with using, and also with happy.....if you don't have to drill, use whatever you are happy with. If my buddy were answering this I'm sure he would say "Add a peep sight and forget about it!" I've never owned a Win 94, but I've seen my buddy shoot a lot and he is pretty darned good (and quick) with his peep. And he's even older than me Razz Good luck with your new experience in deer hunting. But watch out.....Whitetails will soon become an obsession !!! Shocked

Howdy Lazer. If your going to be hunting thick areas iron sites might be the way go. Where i live most of my shots for deer are 200 yds or less all of my deer rifles have a 3-9x40 thats just my personal preferance. I do a lot of hunting out of a tree stand i will keep it on 3 power in case one sneaks up on me and then if i see one out there a little ways i will crank it up to 9 power. Wink

Why would one want to put a scope on a Mod 94?? The scope can see further then the rifle can shoot. Anything past a hundred yards and you are taking a chance of a bad hit. After a hundred yards the "94" drops like a rock. Before all he** breaks loose...My favorite rifle IS my mod 94.

bushmaster, you are right it drops like a rock. I put a peep sight on it as I could not get myself to drill an tap it. I will be going to WV to hunt whitetail. Out here most of the area you would have to crawl or hide behind a rock and wait for one to come by

For your "drops like a rock" 30-30, take it to the range, sight it in at 100yds. When you have it good and zeroed, push the target out to 200yds. On your 8x11 target, hold on the top. Get back to me on how much it misses the bottom of the paper.

Howdy. Scopes can be just a matter of preference, i have great eye sight yet i have scopes on most every gun i can mount them on (imo) the better i can see where i want the bullet to go, the better i can put it there.

Grimel,

Zeroed at 100 yards the 170 grain flat nose will drop from 12 to 14 inches and, depending on weather conditions, cross winds, will wonder all over the place by the time it gets to 200 yards. We are not using this rifle for target shooting in ideal conditions. We hunt with it.
I've owned this mod 94 sense I was 18 and I'm a proud 62. I have hunted this rifle and gotten many deer and one elk with it and I know what it can and can not do. Even though it can put 3 rounds into a three inch dot at 100 yards on a calm day it still is not a 200 yard shooter. Not only has the .30-30 shot more deer then any rifle, it has maimed more deer then any other rifle because people try to shoot it outside the rifle and the persons capability
A lot of people have bought into the theory that if you scope a rifle that it can reach out and touch something. Not the .30-30.......
Lazer,
The peep sight is a good idea instead of the scope or any other device to attempt to increase it's range. And by the way. The rifle that I bought used (It was old when I bought it) for $50.00 and a single shot 12 ga. forty-five years ago is now worth around $500.00. So if you can keep from drilling any extra holes, you are probably better off.

63 and still hunting? Outstanding!!! Then there is a chance for me L O L. If your Winchester is a 1950 or older (mine is a 1948/49 S/N 1608XXX) then please keep it pristeen. Good hunting.

My 94 saddle ring 30-30 was made in 1932, its hanging up on some elk antlers. I,ll be 70 by deer season ,with my eyes it will keep hanging up and I,ll use a 264 Win Mag w/ 4.5-14 X scope.

Tuck2...This is always promising. The guy that I ride horses with on mountain trail is 92 years young and still training horses from the ground and from the saddle. He does have a bit of a dirty mind though. Loves the young ladies.....
