My brother-in-law has a Beretta F92 and he was told that it had a problem with magazine springs getting weak after minimal use as a defensive weapon. Anyone know anything about this? I've been carrying my Firestar for years with fully loaded magazines and have seen no change in the springs of either magazine. Beretta having a problem with this?

I believe that is one of those "shooter's myths" and I have not heard of anything that would confirm that type of problem. That said, the subject of spring set on pistol magazines will always draw divergent opinions. Not facts, just opinions.

Last year, I bought a WWII Remington 1911 that came with the original box and two magazines. The seller claimed the pistol was placed in storage since 1947. Anyway, the owner had unwrapped both magazines from the waxed paper and loaded them with hard ball, the wrapped them up again. After sitting for 59 years, they functioned without flaw.

Maybe the springs your brother in law has in his magazines are just duds ??

Still the Berretta 92's have had their share of problems. If its a earlier magazine there could have been problems with the spring's manufacutring. Smile

I had a 92 in the early 1990's, never had a problem with it. During the time I had it, I kept both mags fully loaded...never had a feeding problem.

Keep it coming...

i have heard this many times over with different mags and different guns, i have a knock off of the 92F made by a different country but on barr. machines, parts are all interchangable, when i bought the thing it was older than dirt, and the mag never had a problem tossing the next one up in line.. this being said, maybe for mil sage, it is different cause of not always having it clean or something like this causing a jam up, but normal usage i would say if it fails to feed it would be a weak spring and thats a manuf. defect.

I carried the 92 for several years and put well over 12,000 rounds through it with regular qualification and weekly practice. I carried one mag in and two extras on the belt and had a fourth that I rotated. We did see spring weakening or "set" in the magazine springs using a tension guage. We replaced the weak ones in enough numbers to say that yes they do get weak or take a set when loaded for extended periods. Extended Periods in our case was 6 months without letting the springs rest out of tension. Those of us that fired thousands of rounds didn't have the tension problems. The guys that only fired simi-annual qualification and never let the springs rest, except at simi anual qualification and armorer gun inspection, did have the tension problem. That is not a myth or or urban ledgend but actual experience with testing using a strain guage at the armory.

I had a 96, same thing only in 40S&W and after countless rounds I've never had a feed problem even in the cold of a Michigan winter.
