I was wandering how long it would take. Just found this tonight on the net.

Ammunition Buyers May Undergo Background Checks
Written for the web by Marcey Brightwell, Reporter

California may become the first state in the nation to require background checks on all handgun ammunition purchases. The Assembly Public Safety Committee approved legislation Tuesdau that would implement a new ammunition background check system, similar to the background checks currently required for firearm purchases.

"It's unbelievable that it's harder to buy a can a spray paint than a fistful of bullets," said bill author, Assem. Kevin de Leon, D-Los Angeles. "A gang-banger can walk into a sporting goods store today and walk out with a crate of ammunition, with no questions asked."

Assembly Bill 362 would require the background system to be in implemented by 2011, but it would require all handgun ammunition buyers to start presenting identification to ammunition dealers beginning in 2008. Dealers would then be required to forward that information to the Department of Justice.

The legislation is sponsored by Los Angeles law enforcement groups as part of a package of anti-gang measures. It will go before the Assembly Appropriations Committee next month.

I understand how you feel..

That's how we Aussies feel after the Port Arthur incident. Mad
Well... at least you still got the right to buy semi auto .22 and pump action shotguns.

Doesn't surprise me at all, at all.

On top of that, Tejon Ranch, one of the larger operations in So. Cal., which charges hunters of all kinds a fee to use its acreage, is said to be going "non lead" for all ammuntion, be it rimfire, centerfire, and shotgun, used on the ranch.
I couldn't afford the fees when I lived in Bakersfield, so we used to park at Fort Tejon, and climb over the fence onto National Forest land, where shooting was legal. That has probably changed by now, though.

The ban will eliminate ALL .22 long rifle rimfire shooting, because there is no existing non-lead round for that caliber, and likely, none to be developed, due to R & D costs. Non-lead rounds for centerfire are katy bar the door expen$ive, too.

Just another hit the shooting community has taken, and will continue to take, until we get smart, and start voting for legislators on all levels who are constitution and gun friendly.

Until then, we have the government we deserve. Mad

Let's see the "logic" here, the gang bangers are going to obey the new law, because they do not obey the old laws now.... they will not have someone that can clear, buy for them nor will the ammo get to the "black market." They also will not go over the state line. No, this new law will save us all.... We can identify the ammo..... now wait... nope, .... so all ammo must be banned.

When you folks get a gut full of CA and leave, will the last person with common sense turn out the lights and shut the door?

Bad news. When there are background checks for ammo and reloading components, costs will skyrocket. Remember, the power to tax is the power to destroy. My advice is to fight hard against these stupid restrictions and stock up in case we fail. All the best...

I guess i need to ask the question... where is it difficult to buy spray paint?? California? If the California Legislature cant figure out a way to curb graffiti other than to restrict spray paint sales, what chance do they have? What's next?? A ban on sharp objects? Restrictions on the number of butter knives in your house?? (After all, you COULD be impaled if you had an EXTRA dull knife on the floor as you fell down). As an extreme you COULD combat the smog problem by NOT selling gasoline (or did they try that??), but that wouldn't be MY first choice, besides how would stop the run away black market spray paint/gasoline business? Here's an idea-- try throwing your "fistful of bullets" at the crook that's stealing your car with the empty gas tank. He'll have gas AND the time to stop and paint "HA HA" in your parking space.

The spry paint thing was originaly for huffing, kids sprying the paint into bags to get high.

Don't know about the state but the town I grew up in wanted to out law cars and move the interstate because of the smog from it and the nuclear stuff that was transported on it.

I guess you misunderstood my point. Outlawing or restricting everything YOU deem potentially harmful is even more irresponsible than ignoring it. Just 'cause YOU don't agree with it doesn't make it WRONG. Again...California Mentality... OUTLAW CARS??? What the ****?? Does Arnold drive? Or does he melt into the sewer system and appear as needed?

Mad Mad Mad Mad Rant

No I "got the point" I just didn't like how it was put. There are a lot of stuff that this state does that doesn't make sense but some of the rules do and well frankly I agree with the spry paint issue. There was other ways that it could have been said. And well I guess it might be me at the moment but it hit me wrong with how it was said. Sorry if I "missed the point" but I can understand how the state is trying to show that they are being proactive on an issue that is getting out of control. While it may not be the best idea it is still more than what they have been doing. I know that it won't stop those who don't follow the laws and I am pissed that it is going on and yes they are going about it wrong but I still don't think doing nothing isn't going to work. Sorry if this is going to get everyone yelling at me but something about the issue needs to be done. We just had another shoting in the area and while I don't think this law will help with it is still getting the concept that something needs to be done out there. It is to open the dialog not whine about how stupid some of the things the state is doing is. We have the right to "bear arms" and that right is not being taken away. Regulating it is not the same as removing.
Also we elect the people who are trying to pass these laws. If WE don't like how they are doing things we need to be active, (something I'm trying to get my students to do) write, call, e-mail, protest, or even run for office ourselves. Until then we have no one to blame for the out come that our elected officals do.

I'm also so sick and tired of the theory of "California Mentality." There are other states that have the same ideas and we always get blamed for having these out landish ideas. Well we have some of the most diverese land and people in the country and frankley it's hard enough getting along within the state without other states lumping us all together. As a 3rd generation Northern California/Jeffersonian I don't like what the southern half of the state does and how it reflects on the rest of us. There is a good chunck of us who love our 2nd amendment rights, having the woods to go "lose" ourselves in, and whining about the other half of the state. (Great now I'm sounding like the liberal everyone outside of the state calls me.)

So if you want to lump us all with the "panicking tree hunging, animal rights, anti-gun, enviornmentalists" go for it but that's only part of the state.

Oh and before I get told to "chill out" I'm enjoying my rant Bushy and will continue for a while since I've been on it since I was 10 and was told I came from "bubble land."

Now now....lets not pick on Bushy. Why would anyone think that Bushy is going to go off his head cause people want to vent their spleen? Bushy is a caring and sharing individual that like anybody else in this world speaks his mind on the odd ocassion. And I say that in all sincerity and not tongue in cheek.

I've been following a number of these threads and I am beginning to wonder why they are lasting as long as they do. I suppose that in a round about sort of way they are indirectly connected with our chosen sport of firearm usage, but methinks that some of the comments can get a little heated and off topic.

Now, I'm not one of the Moderators or Staff and I suppose realistically I don't have the right to sound off about this, but I suppose that we should endeavour to keep things reasonably calm and write our comments in such a way that they won't be taken the wrong way and also so as to not offend anybody.

Okay.....soapbox packed up and put away....again Laughing

Cheers, Vince

Actually I thought the spray paint thing was a waste of time...Besides let them "huff" aerosol paint...It will eventually improve the gene pool as they "huff out"...

rdncktink...I escaped the USSR of C last July because I could not see where there would ever be any improvment for those that were sane. Even your govenator is run by a left wing liberal (For those that don't know, his wife is a Kenedy)...Where I am now, very few people are telling me how to live and they promote gun carry. I now have my CCW (was easy to get) and if you don't want one you can still carry a gun hidden (concealed) and loaded in your car (it's legal here) for protection without a CCW (My wife opted for that). That's right a loaded gun in your car. How about that. What a concept...Churches are allowed to help public schools refurbish the buildings with church funds without worries of church and state interference. I even go to a church to vote in the elections.

The list of things that the USSR of C does not allow is a very long one. There just isn't enough room to list all of them, but I think you get the jist of this anyway...I actually feel FREE here. Whereas in the USSR of C I didn't... California (USSR of C) deserves all the bad press it gets...And there IS a "california mentality". And as long as you (not you in particular, but the people of ca.) allow it to exist and let the other USSR of C residence try to push it off on other states and people, it will continue to exist...

Your turn to rant Tink. Boy...It's a long way down off this apple (soap) box...

Nope I'm done with my rant. I'm just sick of the lumping of the whole state. There's more so-cals than nor-cals and the keep moving up so we don't have much of a voice. Man I wish we would just split this state like the wanted to before Pearl Harbor.

And it's not a soap/apple box, I think I climbed a piller last night and got a headach from the thin air up there. Sorry. I'll try to spackel that whole that my thoughts tend to spill through before I have a chance to censor them.

Also sorry for picking on Bushy he's just one of the few with strong opinions who are willing to state them. It was more of an, how to say it, expectation and willingness to acept what came my way.

Oh forgot to say on the Bushy comment I made, it's also kindof a respect what he would have to say about my rant. I have very few who are willing to "put me in my place" normally get the eye roll with the "OK Whatever" and they move on because they think I'll go postal on them.
