Cooking fish in thebush.

Simply lay out a piece of alumium foil, put the cleaned fish on the foil, put butter in the inside and around it, put in your mix of spices (I use a mixture I make up of salt, pepper, hot red pepper, oragano, garlic powder, and lemon powder) wrap the fish a couple of times with the alumium, set above the fire till you feel its cooked, check it, if cooked eat it if not it needs more time. Laughing

"Big D"...You must camp out of a trailer or you take pack horses. Aluminum foil is something I can't afford to carry. But I certainly can get my trout cooked without it...To a "T" I might add...

Bushmaster,

Aluminum foil is light, I generally cut them to size before I go out and fold them up so they can be "squeezed" anywhere they may fit. Smile

Trout can be done nicely if you follow Mitri's recipe and bury it embers to bake for awhile. You can wrap them in layers of green leaves or bark too (for those of us without foil) and it'll work, (just check often and use a few layers of leaves/bark)

I've smoked some "leaves" in a pipe that I probably won't be discussing here... Very Happy ...but those days are behind me. Going to try those maple leaves, though. The maple, being our national symbol and all, is actually more indigenous to southern areas. Green poplar bark is good for baking in fire embers with, you can cut into the second layer and you've got a fairly thick piece of bark that you can remove in the shape you cut. I roll it out flat and run the knife blade flat down the inside of the bark. It runs off quite a bit of the sap, although if you let the sap cook into your fish, you'll have a fish recipe that will cure a headache.

wtf Tracker....you are starting to worry me mate. Very Happy

Nothing better than banana leaves for cooking in hot rocks or under embers. But I don't 'spose you guys in the far north have banana trees handy would you? In that case you can coat your unscaled fish in thick mud and cook it that way in the embers. When the mud is hard the fish will be cooked. All you do is crack the mud coating off and the skin and scales come away and you are left with the nice white meat. You can also do snake and lizard this way. In a pinch there is nothing wrong with simply placing your unscaled fish on top of the embers and cook it that way...turning regularly. Another way to cook fish is to make a wire "basket" out of a length of old fencing wire and grill it over the embers.

I have spit roasted rabbit in the field......poked a piece of wire through it from back to front, or vice versa, supported it on two green forked sticks and cooked it over nice hot embers thataway.....takes a while though.

If you are hungry enough you can always find a way to cook your game.

Cheers, Vince

I learned to cook rabbit, muskrat, grouse, ptarmigan --all by making a spit out of a green stick and cooking them over the fire. I was just offering another option there, Vince ol' mate. Yeah, not a lot of banana trees where I come from, or snakes or lizards for that matter. I've heard of the mud method before but have never tried it. There is mud where I come from Very Happy Very Happy maybe I'll give it a go sometime.

What was that was worrying you? I was just referring to...poplar, etc.

My Fourth was outstanding! I spent it in a campground behind Mt. Rushmore, and visited the Crazy Horse Monument, but decided not to attend the fireworks display at Rushmore.

They were expecting about 35,000 people, and we were told that we would have to park in a little town about 6 miles away, and walk to the monument entrance...uphill. No, thank you! Getting everybody out afterwards must have been a nightmare.

Security was tight--roadblocks and all. They were not taking chances on unpleasantness happening.

My wife surprised a young South Dakota Highway Patrol Officer at a roadblock when she thanked him for the security. They don't hear much of that, I guess.

That evening, I was relaxing in my recliner about dusk, and they did a fly by with a B-1. Silhouetted against the sky, I thought it was a missile at first, with its wings swept back, and afterburner flames the length of the fuselage, all blue pink. WOW! And my camera was in the car.

lots of lakes here and their were many different shows that were in sync on certain radio stations.
I was in a kayak most of the morning and then drove around the valley for a bit. stayed home with a bon fire and listened to all that was going around.
Tracker you can teach me those recipes of ptarmigan and muskrat. have fire pit built just right for those over the fire meals here.

Ruffed grouse probably down there, but they're tastier anyway.

Fireworks are legal in only two parts of Australia and that is under review I think, however you can pay to have a professional Fireworks Display put on.....if you can afford it.

Ammo prices vary. I don't usually look at the prices of factory ammo because I reload, however, have a look at this website, it is just one of our ammunition suppliers.
