Update on Joe Arpaio
TO THOSE OF YOU NOT FAMILIAR WITH JOE ARPAIO
HE IS THE MARICOPA ARIZONA COUNTY SHERIFF
AND HE KEEPS GETTING ELECTED OVER AND OVER
THIS IS ONE OF THE REASONS WHY:
Sheriff Joe Arpaio(In Arizona )
who created the " Tent City Jail":
He has jail meals down to 40 cents a serving and charges the inmates for them.
He stopped smoking and porno magazines in the jails. Took away their weights Cut off all but "G" movies.
He started chain gangs so the inmates could do free work on county and city projects.
Then He Started
Chain GangsFor Women
So He Wouldn't GetSued For
Discrimination.
He took away cable TV Until
he found out there was
A Federal Court Order that
Required Cable TV ForJails.
So He Hooked Up The CableTV Again
Only Let In The Disney Channel And TheWeather Channel.
When asked why the weather channel
He Replied,
So TheyWill Know
How HotIt's Gonna Be
While TheyAre Working
ON
My Chain Gangs.
He Cut Off Coffee Since It Has
Zero Nutritional Value.
When the inmates complained, he told them,
"This Isn't The Ritz/Carlton.
If You Don't Like It, Don't Come Back."
More On The Arizona Sheriff:
With Temperatures Being Even Hotter Than Usual In Phoenix
(116 Degrees Just Set A New Record),
the Associated Press Reports:
About 2,000 Inmates Living In A Barbed-Wire-Surrounded Tent Encampment At The Maricopa County Jail Have Been Given Permission To Strip Down To Their Government-Issued
Pink Boxer Shorts.
On Wednesday, hundreds of men wearing boxers wereeither curled up on their bunk beds or chatted in the tents, which reached
138 Degrees
InsideThe Week Before.
Many Were Also Swathed In Wet, Pink Towels As SweatCollected On Their Chest s And Dripped Down To Their PINK SOCKS.
"It Feels Like We Are InA Furnace,"
Said James Zanzot,
An Inmate Who Has Lived In The TENTS for 1 year.
"It's Inhumane."
Joe Arpaio, the tough-guy sheriff
who created the tent city and long ago started making his prisoners wear pink, and eat bologna sandwiches, is not one bit sympathetic
He said Wednesday that he told all of the inmates:"It's 120 Degrees In Iraq And Our Soldiers Are Living In Tents Too,
And They Have To Wear Full Battle Gear, <
But
They Didn't Commit Any Crimes,
So Shut Your Damned Mouths!"
Way ToGo, Sheriff!
Maybe if all prisons were like this one there would be a lot less crime and/or repeat offenders.
Criminals should be punished for their crimes - not live in luxury until it's time for their parole, only to go out and commit another crime so they can get back in to live on taxpayers money an d enjoy things taxpayers can't afford to have for themselves.

A different viewpoint:
Arpaio is the laughing stock of Arizona and will be soundly defeated if he tries to get re-elected. A publicity hound from day one, he has an administrative staff so inept that most of the "best and brightest" long ago fled from the Maricopa County Sheriff's employment. Millions of dollars in lawsuits have been filed against him and it has cost the tax payers dearly to indulge his antics. He is vindictive, often irrational and the godfather of chronyism.
A measure of effectiveness in the penal system is recidivism. Despite his grandstanding measures, recidivism has not gone down. While he may play well to the "get tough on crime crowd" and the "get tough on illegals crowd" there have been no notable gains during his tenure, rather he has been an increasingly disruptive and divisive factor in the community.
I hope none of your several states ever has to endure the likes of this megalomaniac. And, that is my objective view!

Say what you want..He's still got my vote. I would rather see my tax dollers wasted on his actions than the garbage that we have here in the North..JMO

I know a guy who was supposed to do a few days inside in Washington state. It was some minor beef, really just a few days. They booked his time for him because the jail was so crowded they have to make reservations..I'm not kidding. He was working up north in BC and couldn't make it when they'd booked his time and tried to get it changed....couldn't. So at the risk of losing thousands in income (if you leave the job you lose the job) he stayed at work and tried to book a new time when he got back to the city. They told him a warrant had been issued for him and now if they pick him up, he's looking at doing probably 3 months. He also offered to pay the original fine that the original sentece had been set for, that was unacceptable as well.So....yeah, the penal system has become a joke in a lot of places in more ways than one.
I sure don't have the answers on how to solve all of the problems of North American penal systems, Can. and US are very similar, but I do believe they are utter failures. I like to agree with those who want to take a tougher stance on people in jail, they certainly did do the crime etc. but Handloader's point is a very important one. Recidivism is one of the most important yardsticks for measuring the effectiveness of the system and how many offenders are repeat offenders? A lot of those guys really don't give a rat's ### how they're treated. Most of them don't break the law planning on getting busted (again) and I'd bet a good percentage are going to whine about their living conditions no matter how bad, or good, those conditions are. My thought is that most elected officials who take stances that involve a lot of "grandstanding", I don't care of what political stripe, usually seem to have very little substance to back themselves up, or like this sheriff, are willing to let the public purse cover the lawsuits.
It's most interesting to me that the person who offered the "different viewpoint" is from Arizona.

I think all prisons and jails should be like his is described. I think alot of crimes would be averted if public hangings were brought back, as well as public floggings.

Well I kinda think criminals probably do whatever it is they're going to do based on the notion that they're going to get away with it, or in some cases are so desperate that the threat of punishment doesn't deter them (in those cases it would certainly help to bring those things back) so the punishment doesn't fit into their thinking an awful lot of the time. I've met a few people in my life who were on the wrong side of the law, and there seemed to be a pretty consistent pattern in their underwhelming intellectual capacities. Criminal "masterminds" are few and far between. I do think there's an awful lot of taxpayer dollars going to waste providing services for people in jails that are supposed to rehabilitate them and, once again, the recidivism rate shows that's not working. I'm not saying I've got the answer, just suggesting that I haven't seen any that seem to work yet.

Jail's do not rehabilitate criminals, It teaches them new and improved ways to do bad things to good people.
Get rid of jails and kill off the bad people.
