I have been hunting snowshoe hares for the past week with archery equipment. I have been using Saunders bludgeon points on aluminum shafts out of a 70 pound bow. I assumed that this combination would thump a hare so hard that it would be lights out. To my surprise, this does not seem to be a very effective combination. I have shot numerous hares that get back up and run into the brush where they are hard to find. Last night I shot a hare at 30 yards, arrow passed through, rolled the hare, but the little bugger got back up and made it into thick stuff and I never recovered it. The arrow was covered in blood. Tonight I shot a hare, same thing, flattened it but it got back up and ran into brush dragging my arrow with it and I could not find hare nor arrow. Does anyone have experience with the zwickey judo point on small game? I am thinking of trying them or just using broadheads. I am afraid with broadheads though I would lose a lot of arrows. I am happy with the flight of the bludgeon point but not the effectiveness in stopping rabbits.

Crikey....they must be tough buggers.

I am not a bow hunter....and have never used one in the field.....so I am not conversant with the accuracy of a bow, however I would imagine that a head shot would be more than sufficient to stop one in its tracks.

Looking at pics of the ZWICKEY JUDO POINT and the ZWICKEY CONDOR UNLOSABLE MIRACLE POINT I would imagine that they would deliver sufficient shock to do the job, but as I said....bows are an unknown quantity to me so I will be interested in what those that do know have to say.

Cheers, Vince

I prefer .410 if they are eatable cottontails. If just jacks, use whatever :).

I have seen people use a wide washer, screwed between the shaft and the practice tip for use against small game. Those guillotine heads work against small game quite well too

Just this year I started carrying a arrow in the quiver with a judo point but haven't shot at anything yet. I'm pretty cheap Smile and arrows at $100 a doz, I worry about destroying it so It's still in the quiver Laughing Maybe I will shoot it to see how the judo point works Very Happy

I ordered some Judo points today, I hope that with the 4 prongs they will kill a rabbit quicker before they can crawl into brush. I tired of shooting the hares with a .22 and like the challenge of using a bow.

#7.5 shot???? I have about 60lb of #7.5 and I only use it on clays. For rabbits I use either #4, #5 or #6 shot.

I only use a .22 for rabbits, used to have a .410 for a while when I was a kid. Don't do archery, afraid of the ethnic jokes my friends will make LOL.

On eastern cottontails, we use whatever is left over in the ammo cabinet. They're not tough to kill, but heavier shot is more effective in heavy cover.

I've used everything from 20 gauge #8 light target loads to 12 gauge 3.5" #4 Turkey loads that didn't pattern well enough in my gun to use turkey hunting. Funny how you DON'T feel the recoil when you fire the big 12's at game!

That wouldn't give a lot of penetration Dallan. Does an arrow carry enough energy to rely on the hitting power to flatten the critter"

Pick on Tracks.....nah....never....well maybe never. Laughing

Just think Tracks....if you were an aussie aboriginal you would be hoiking boomerangs at the critters.....and they come back, unlike an arrow. Or you could be throwing a spear....extra range if you use a woomera too.

By the way.....do ya know what they call a boomerang that doesn't come back????

The saunders bludgeon points I was using didnt look like they would give much penetration either, but to my surprise I was getting pass through on hares with regularity. If the arrow stayed in the hare it was the exception. I think it would be better if the arrow didnt get much penetration. Even the hares that I recovered I had to run after to keep an eye on where they ended up. When I get my judo points I will try them out and let you know how they work if it doesnt snow first. I think I would lose a lot of arrows in the snow.

My dad and I love Jackrabbit, its good meat guys! its just that according to your hunting mentality(atleast to most of you) Jacks are not enough of a challenge or u just never tasted them. my dad makes a stew out of em, cooks it on low for like 3-4 hours, meat melts in your mouth!yummy

and we hunt em with 12 gauge full choke using #2 Challenger Magnum rounds, drops in a sec.

Daniel
