Anyone have and use Trailcams?

My dad just bought one for kicks and has been having fun with it. He has little interest in hunting anymore but has enjoyed messing around with his cam. He actually got a pict or two of an elk sucking on a waterpipe for a drink.

Hi

Dallan: Which part of the hunt is he uninterested in?

If it's the humping through the woods and tracking and sneaking and getting close up on a critter, I have no suggestions, but if it's the actual shooting, killing, dressing, butchering and storing that's got him hunt-shy, buy the guy a nice digital camera with a short telephoto lens!

I used to do the humping and tracking and sneaking and getting up close, then take a picture with my 35mm camera because I didn't have any room for the meat, but loved the humping and tracking and sneaking and up-close-getting.

Call it, "nature photography," if you want. It's STILL hunting! Just the trophies are different.

Now, with the arthritis, I'm pretty much past the humping, too.
Smile I sure am glad that targets don't take up much room in my freezer.... Smile

Bingo.

He doesnt like nor want the meat, doesnt care about antlers and just doesnt have an interest in it anymore. The last deer he shot 2 years ago, a 4x3 muley he regretted, saying it would have made some 14yr old alot more happy than it made him.

That he got excited with the trailcam thing was quite surprising and I am happy to see him excited about anything wildlife related. I am looking into a computer setup with wireless cameras that monitor things 24/7 and can store thousands of hours of video / pictures... right now I'm trying to figure out the cheapest way to remote access the computer, it is a long distance call to the cabin but I am trying to figure out if we can get a local internet connection... then we could set it up as a web server and browse to it.

Neighbors have a similar setup and thats what kicked off this general interest in it for him.

ROFL Somehow that doesnt surprise me Hiding

Do whitetails tend to use the same trails repeatedly? Mule deer will use the general "area" habitually when moving but they sorta wander along rather than stay on a defined path.

Elk however will wear a path very deep and noticable from one point to another.

Howdy Around hear there is smaller wood lots so they seem to use the same trails year to year, but they very throughout the fall and winter they may use a trail early in the year not use it for a while and then use it again later in the winter. There pressure trails stay pretty consistant witch is good if there are a lot of guys in the surounding woods i hunt those.

Mooning trailcams........Hmmmm, it's been quite a few years......I guess i'll google for my 'can' because after the pics came back, my best friend picked up the photos and a big "P" and "N" sticker was on the outside (and the embarassment from not knowing) the cashier said "You must tell us if you are turning in 'NUDE' photographs so we can take proper measures to aid in their development....SIR". His responce was...No, you must be mistaken!

Then he looked! Jaw Drop ROFL He vowed to put them on the net since.....But i found one pic, and i 'think' he lost the other? Mr. Green

Ya gotta go to this website if you're thinking about using, buying, upgrading, etc., a trail cam. www.chasingame.com
These are some local fellows that are doing a darn good appraisal of the various game cams on the market. They are not beholding to any manufacturer for any reason and have come up with some very interesting results. They also update their own pictures to the website nearly every week. It is fun to check them out periodically. Thought you folks might enjoy reading the pros and cons in the various price ranges and about some of the common pitfalls one can make when first starting.

www.chasingame.com

Enjoy,
Yotebuster Very Happy
