Cary
The problem is you could hardly call it "hunting" because them kangaroo critters are so damned easy to shoot at.

Other than that, most hunting by city fellows here are on farms and ranches that are privately owned anyway.
Some of these places charges AU$65 per person per night for the privilege to shoot off a few rounds in their property.
Guided hunts are only done on private property anyway.
Just recently there is the R licence that allow limited hunts on crown lands.

I guess they would be like shooting penned cattle. That's not much fun, unless you would shoot around their feet to get them running first. Are they commercially raised?

Hi Guys, been traipsing around the country for work this week so missed most of this.
I don't know of too many people who hunt roos, shoot yes, usually with a spot light. I do a far bit of culling for some of the stations around this way - roos, donkeys, horses, camels and dogs. Used to shoot rabbits for a pro shooter til that went belly up when the calicivirus 'accidentally' escaped the test facility.
Roos can be thik as up this way or none to be seen depending on the season.
I once shot 50 in the house paddock at a mates place - only 'cause that was all the ammo I had taken. The house paddock was about 20 acres in size!
If you must eat them, I usually use them for dog meat, a hind leg in marinade isn't too bad.
As for wombats best way is to boil the meat in a pot with a rock, when the rock is soft throw away the wombat and eat the rock! Works for Galahs too!

Wicky,

I like your recipe for wombat. I did that with squirel once. It sure took a lot of salt though.

If you like Wombat - you will love Aussie Mule. So far as roos, the best way to bait them is with a .22 cal camera and they come right up to you and then it is straight to the "Q" - this one is a 2 - for - 1 special (couple extra legs hanging out of the pouch).

You have to watch out for the Aussie Mules though - they have attitudes, this is what happened when we came at it with a fork and some salt:

I was wondering if they were reclaimable and put to good use...I'd just keep the salt and fork away from them...Mules? Mules are not able to procreate...How about donkeys? Could they be donkeys?? Looks awfuly small for a mule...

May I introduce you to my friend Joe?

I don't know, that Kangaroo looks like it's pissed! I couldn't even draw a bead on him, he's too close. Heck, I can't focus on anything until it's at least 6 feet away! The eye doctor calls that old aged eyes.

I've got donkeys here at the house and they, even though just as tame as a dog, will bite the crap out of you or kick you. I think it's in their nature.

Bushy, I got rid of all my horses as soon as I figured out that I could work cattle with a sack of cubes. And you know what, I haven't been beat up, raked off, rolled on, sh*t on, bit, damn near de-capitated, thrown in a prickly pear bunch, had the wind knocked out of me, or stomped on since.
I don't miss it one bit. Now the cattle have exclusive rites to that treatment!

If a rancher or cowboy tells you he ain't been thrown, he's a lying dog, so I don't want any "I ain't never been thrown" tales, unless you ain't never rode. Ha Ha!

(Or)

Bushy, since you're an old Black Shoe (you can tell a fib legally), I guess you could start it off like a sea story (Now this ain't no s**t).

Well, I gotta run, I've got a chicken house to build.

Have a great day!

Cary

Kicked? bit? Thrown? and a few other things a horse can invent? Why yes...How did you know?

Ol' Joe, though, could be trusted with the grandchildren. He's saddle trained and cow trained. He has never bitten me, kicked me or thrown me. He has refused to climb a hill though. Had to walk up that damned hill by myself only to find a 4 foot coastal rattler on the trail...Know what? I trust Joe a bit better now...Sure wish, sometimes, I still had him...

Yup...There are two kinds of stories..."Once upon a time" and "This is a no-sh**ter"... Very Happy

Yep....they be feral donkeys. No shortage of 'em in the outback.

Hey Cary....that 'roo ain't cranky, just inquisitive. The 'roos in animal parks are usually pretty docile, although you still have to watch them. If they "stand up", reach out with their arms and grab ya then you better watch out for their legs. What they do is steady themselves by hanging onto you (they ain't boxing), then rock back on their tail and lash out with their legs. The single big toe...and its massive toenail...is a nasty weapon. They can gut a dog with it. You can imagine what hopping around in the dirt and stones etc all day will do to it....they can get rather sharp.

A big Red 'roo can get up to 6' + when standing upright, with "arms" that any man would be proud of.

'Roos are actually quite intelligent animals. They will head into a dam when being chased by a dog. When the dog follows them he is as good as dead. They will simply push him under the water and hold him there, or kick the Bejesus outa him. I've seen a dog struggle out of a dam trailing his innards behind him only to die on the bank.

Cheers, Vince

Vince,

It seems to me that all the roo huggers should be forced to baby sit roos in their homes and back yards, to get real touchy-feely and emotionally involved with these nice critters, so they'll know exactly what they are protecting.

The same thing goes for all the idiots worrying about rattlesnakes going extinct.

I just had an eerie thought about meeting a 6-foot tall angry kangaroo in a dark alley behind the pub, and while I (in a slightly inebriated state) was going for my pistol in my ankle holster, the sucker kicks me!

Okaaaaaay....that does not conjure up a pretty sight Cary. I'm a bit concerned that something like that popped into your head mate.
Very Happy Very Happy Laughing Laughing Laughing

Actually while you are bending over heading for that ankle holster he would jump straight over you and head of into the night.

G'day boys. Just joined up, great idea this. I have spent years shooting (not hunting) roos and let me tell you there is nothing exciting about driving around all night picking off roos out to 3 or 4 hundred yards. I have however stalked them with a bow, this is a bit harder but still not much of a challange. As for eating them, your on your own. If any of you get to Australia let me know, I'll drive you shoot!

Vince, I'm just up the hill in Toowoomba. Small world eh.

Gidday Wanndog...welcome to HuntingNut mate. Grab a beer, pull up a stump and rest awhile.

Ah, Toowoomba...nice place...when it rains. My eldest daughter used to live out towards Pittsworth...in fact, the next on the right after the Mobil servo 'bout 20 km out. If ya didn't stop at the first bend, you would end up in their yard. The bloke she married (and divorced) worked the dairy there.

Where do you do your shooting mate? Had a bit of a look around Pittsworth, but there wasn't anything worthwhile at all. I'm heading off down to Stanthorpe next week....got a date with some bunnies and feral dogs.

Cheers, Vince
