Wildhorse, you probably already have this but...

The Speer #14 lists the following loads, all around 1100 ft/sec:

.44 Mag, cartridge OAL 1.600"

Win 231 - 7.3 grains
700-x - 5.7
Bullseye - 6.0
Unique - 6.8
HP-38 - 6.0

Speer suggests #8-#9 shot and a flat profile seating plug.

A coworker told me a tory about hiking somewhere out west where there was dry country with rattlesnakes and grizzleys. He carried a .44 Mag revolver with a shot cartridge followed by heavy loads. He stepped off a rock and right between three rattlesnakes. He carefully eased his gun out and shot the closest snake. Then "I had to stand there forever, waiting until the dust cleared enough to see where the other snakes were!" Just a cautionary tale... Wink

I am leaving now to try this new load---Using 700X-(because I have some handy). I have a place near the farm that has a "few", of those pesky critters. I will be back in about an hour.

Nope! I think the snakes got him!
I used to make snake loads for my 357... The shot pattern was 1" per foot from the muzzle. If you get too close you can miss and if you are not close enough it is ineffective.
Now I have a 410 / 45 darringer that does a LOT better.

I've used .22 Mag shot cartridges in a 5.5" Ruger Single Six. Very effective on a 4' copperhead from about 5' away. I still shot him twice and then decapitated him with a shovel. I've seen all those movies where the bad guy/monster gets back up after being "killed"... Wink

Sorry I took so long, but this guy just did not want to get with the program.

I am trying to attach a picture.

OK---my picture is too large and I do not know how to downsize it.

Would say that stick is a bit crooked at the end..
May get a bit unstable if you use it in uneven ground...
Maybe a few minutes on the fire will straighten it up.
