Pumpkinslinger, I use a 243 Win and I like 87 gr V-Max bullets. Where we Coyote hunt there are also Mountain Lions. I carry enough gun and bullet to take care of not only Coyotes, Foxs, and Bobcats. but also the much larger, heavier, and dangerous Mountain Lion. The Hornady 87 grain V-Max is large enough to do that. I used to hunt Coyotes with a 204 Ruger with 40 grain bullets but decided to go to something bigger because of the Mountain Lions.

How's everyone, I just got into the preadator hunting and a new .243 Howa. Can't go wrong when ya get a new gun. I ain't got the chance to go but about twice this year with no luck. Just can't seem to run all the deer off, but I'll keep trying. We'll see how the rest of the season goes!!

I use 55 grain bullets in a Ruger M77 with a Leupold scope. I use Primos open reed calls and an electronic "Predator One" by Hunter Specialties. Monday I had the electronic call on mouse squeaks and had a hawk land 40 feet from me and just look at it like he was thinking "Now how am I supposed to eat that?" He sat there about 30 seconds just turning his head and looking at it before flying off. Laughing

Over four plus decades of calling, I've had three mountain lions come in. At that point one feels rather undergunned with a 223 Rem or less. OTOH, the 243 Win often destroys pelts and if that is a consideration I believe other options are available that take care of the big stuff, is superbly accurate and can be used in 22 centerfires.

When calling in areas where lions could respond, my first choice is the useage of the Barnes TSX 53gr. I use it with 223 Rem and 220 Swift. It is a good enough bullet for mule deer and antelope. Damage to pelts is marginal.

Anticipating some comments about cost, my experience in calling is that if I can fire ten or more rounds on coyotes/bobcats during the day, cost is insignificant or about the price of a gallon of premium gasoline.

A fellow caller shot a responding mountain lion with his 223 Remington using 55gr Nosler BTs. It took seven shots. At 30 yards.

Hi, New to the site but not the sport. Use a NEF .223 with a scope. Looking for property to hunt in the Cheyenne or Laramie area of Wyoming. Would like to post some really great shots of some P-Dogs. Hope someone can help.

Welcome to our fine site rehabman. You might just find what you're looking for here. If not, there's always lots of gun talk and fine conversation.

As Cary said mate...welcome rehabman. Not a PD hunter myself...we don't have the little buggers out here in Australia...but I do hunt rabbits, feral cats, feral dogs, feral pigs, foxes...anything feral...and that includes deer out here.

Sit a while mate, someone will be along to help. As for posting pics, well there are a couple of different ways to do that...as an attachment.... through Photobucket...or make your own Photo Album here in HuntingNut.

Cheers, Vince

Vince,

What do y'all consider game animals, worthy of a BBQ or the frying pan, in Australia?

I'm talking about the most desirable game animals. I had some workers from southwest Mexico up here in the 70s doing ranch work that loved to eat pack rats! This was not my idea of a gormet meal! I passed on that one.

Pumpkinslinger
I use a old interarms Mark X 22-250, loaded up with a 50 gr sp. Love the overall performance of the 50 gr bullet, and it is a dog slayer. I have shot several yotes with it over the last few years.

Thanks for the response Froeal! Work has delayed (read as RUINED) my loading and hunting but I hope to get back to it soon.

Hey Mark,

It's good to see another Tennessee Volunteer on board. I'm in Kingston, 40 miles west of Knoxville.
