This is one very lucky guy.

I don't believe that the problem is the backstop...more a case of shooting on the wrong type of target too close.

I think that he needs to buy a lottery ticket. He is one lucky man.

I pulled a dumb one like that several years ago.
We were getting rid of trash in the house, and had rented a dumpster.
One thing that I tossed was an old TV.
I was told to break the picture tube, so I took my .22 pistol, and took a very close shot at it.
The tube didn't break, and I felt the bullet zoom past my left ear.
I was lucky, and so was this guy.

Thanks Vince,

Here is a recent story about a woman hit by a 50BMG at Texas Motor Speedway.

I still have a "bald spot" in my left eyebrow where a .22 bullet came back at me years ago. Half an inch lower and I would have lost the eye.

An inch lower, that short home movie would show a guy being shot dead.. Yuck

He's one lucky guy.

Last month a friend of mine was walking up to his steel ringer (8 inch square metal plate that he was shooting at), pulled out his 45 pistol and fired one shot at about 25 feet. The bullet ricochet back, hitting him in the chest. It punctured the skin and thin layer of muscles in his chest, only to be stopped by a rib. Another lucky person.

Those targets are supposed to be angled toward the shooter at the top! That way the bullets go into the ground and not into the shooter!

Paul,

I use an 8 inch square, one inch thick steel plate hung from an A frame on two short pieces of heavy chain. Any time a round hits the plate, the plate gives and creates an angle away from the shooter. I've never had a ricochet come back on me.....not even close. I'm sure that some would say that I'm just lucky.

I have a scar on my right shin were a 22 rimfire bullet hit me after bouncing off some tires stacked and filled with sand at our local club. Hurt like he!!. Just a grazing hit but enough to tear my jeans and skin.

That is funny. I have the same one on the left shin from 50 years ago. Still dark and slightly depressed. It hit right on the sharp edge of the shin bone.

I have heard of people saying a 22LR will bounce back when shot at water. And several people agree they had heard of it. Don't know but they were sure it happened.

I learnt my lesson at about 12 years old when I set up a target on a cement beam, paper hanging below it, so if you hit the paper it kept going into a cement wall 20 feet behind the target. Was shooting my air pistol and hit the cement above the target by accident, hit be above the eye brow and the BB went straight down into my safety glasses. Was glad I put the glasses on, as it only missed the glasses by about half a inch. Shocked

Didn't do that again. Smile

My gongs are made from 1/2" steel too, but I hang them from a pipe welded to the back. That lets them slide onto a smaller pipe where they are free to rotate. At rest they are at a 20 degree angle back at the bottom. The only problem I have ever had is when the bullets go through without making them swing. I once fired three shots in a perfect cloverleaf thinking I was missing. Didn't know I had hit anything until I walked up to it and saw the holes..... Then I got a smile big as Texas on my face!
