A friend mentioned that his deer rifle needed a bit of sprucing up and he never had the time or expertise to do it. I offered to look it over, check it out and clean it up. Oh my, I have never such a neglected, abused and dirty rifle. It is a Winchester Model 670 .30-06 with a 3X-9X scope. I would agree that this rifle has not received adequate cared for quite some time.

Over the last few hours, I have cleaned the bore, stained the stock and reblued various metal parts. The front sight blade is loose in the base and will be tightened up. The barrel and action have exterior rust that needs to be removed. The stock has been abraded to the point that some areas of stain finish are missing. I enjoy working on guns and will do what I can to restore this fine old rifle. I am certain that I will never loan a firearm to the rifle's owner. All the best...
Gil

Gil,

That is the reason I refuse to loan firearms out. Sadly (you guys and gal excluded) I have seen more people neglect their rifles then not.

There are a couple of very select people to whom I would consider loaning a rifle to...but they have their own anyway.

Apart from that..."Don't ask as refusal often offends, and you won't be disappointed."

Gil,
I am sure that you will restore that rifle to much better condition. I would be tempted to give the owner a bill for the efforts. Take care...

In the immortal words of my late father...and others.

"Neither a borrower nor lender be"

With that said I find myself on the totaly other side of this. While sitting in my office the other day a vendor and casual friend dropped by pretty much out of the blue. He is carrying a small rifle case and he tells me "I know you can use this next weekend on the trip out to your sisters place to shoot pds. Take it with ya, even brought some ammo for and I never shot it" "sight it in for me and shoot it all you want".
The thing is obviously brand new Savage 93VT17 17 HMR. I'm not much of a rimfire shooter but hey....I'm thinkin why not. Its not a family heirloom and I will take care of it like my own, just thought it odd he would do that.

If its truly a friend, then it's just a gun.

I have never borrowed a firearm, though I have clean, repaired and tested several for friends, nor have I ever loaned one to anyone, my sons excluded.

Make it look nice Gil...

A guy I shot skeet with for 10 years loaned a Remington 1100 out to one of his friends.

His friend sold it !!! Never replaced it or paid him for it. Needless to say a friendship was lost in it.

I had to learn the hard way to be better on guns . I forgot to clean my musket for 3 days .Luckily I was soon able to restore it with lots of cleaning.

I lost an air rifle once to a friend who "borrowed" it, then "loaned" it to his father, then ... ??? Interestingly enough that guy is now a county sheriff.

I never loan guns or reload ammo for anyone for that very reason!

Also have had problems loaning out my guns to ppl!!
My father once loaned one of our 12 gauge shotguns to a friend, but not just any
shotgun, it was a very nice side-by-side with 30" barrel full/modified choke and it sure was a shooter with 2 triggers!

well at the end of the hunting season i asked for it to be returned and
when i saw that gun was i ever mad!!! smoke must have been pouring out of my ears!!! all he did was wipe it off with a dirty oily rag from the outside.
never cared for taking it all apart!!
needless to say this guy is never getting one of my guns again!!

i love my guns and take care of them!!!!

Dan
