Bushy - not being a long-time pistol shooter - just curious as to your opinion on fixed sites rather than the adjustable - can you throw me some pros/cons - not drawing a line in the sand....just curious and wanting to learn....

I've had two different (and expensive) adjustable sights on this Colt. None could be depended on to stay in adjustment during carry or in the field. They required that I be very careful not to bump them or they would break.
These Novak fixed sights have been set to 25 yards and have never changed in 10 years of nice and rough treatment...
That's about all I can say for them. I do have adjustable sights on my Ruger Blackhawk and S&W mod 19 and they have served me well, but on the Colt 1911.......Not so much.

the timing on this is good. I have a S&W model 4006 with adjustable sights and have not been overly happy with them for similar reasons that you mention above and had been looking to do something different such as fixed sights etc.... kind of why I was asking - thanks for the insight and quick response.

My .02 and worth every penny....For hunting or target work, adjustable sights. For self defense fixed sights.

And if you use the Colt 1911 for all three?

Copy that... Novi's are great for dark shootin. Used them a bunch. Meprolights some too. They dont slice up yer hands like them adj. target sights can. No snaggy either.
I'm so blind now I like the 3-dot's better- BIG dots.
As in Golfball on the front.
Really like yer Colt too....

Heinie Slant Pro in the rear Dawson Precision mini tube (green) up front!!!
The concave design of the Novak’s mess with my eyes.
Bomar adjustable for competition!!!

Trade? Stovepipe? My Colt for an incomplete egg sandwich?
Had Bomar on this colt. Didn't hold up under the strain of shooting under my specs...

I'll have to, again, agree with Bushy on the Novac Fixed sights. that's what came on my Taurus and they work great. The only thing that would make them better is if they were tritium night sights.

I think people are afraid of fixed sights because they think they will get stuck with something less then they desire for a point of impact I've found that the more I shoot my pistol the less I use my sights I train to a 4" x 10" rectangle at 21 ' and don't have any problems as long as I shoot often enough, I think people would be better served shooting more and tweaking less.

He must have one ot the older styles. He must also be alluding to hammer bite. If you look closely at the Beaver tail on my Colt you will see a thin line of wear where the hammer has been striking it during cycling. My Kimber even has a larger beaver tail to prevent hammer bite...

I have never been bit by a semi auto that I didn't earn, and that was only one time. I had the slide go over my thumb when I was on the qual range in the army. I had to put a glove on to keep firing, there was a nice stream of blood. Lucky I didn't have my thumb higher or I could have lost part of it. I learned pretty quick after that one.
I have to say I have got a lot out of this thread, you guys are full of great info. Thanks keep it coming.

The early 1911 Colts and some of the later ones had a short beaver tail that allowed the hammer to extend past it far enough that it would take a chunk our of your hand just between the thumb and fore finger...
The only semi-auto that ever "slide bit" me was my Colt Woodsman .22...Man did thet ever hurt and bleed...
