I think your under estimating the potential of the Barnes bullets!!!

Take a broadside shot in the lungs at a reasonable range and I'm willing to bet you'll get 100% penetration and a deer that won't go more than about 30 yards from where it stood....... if it doesn't fall in its tracks!!!

I appreciate everybody's Input. A Neck shot is a option, I won't take a head shot. I'm a firm believer that shock kills, I have taken over 70 Whitetail deer and have dropped more deer with a lung shot than any other ( broadside shot)location. ( IMO) That 62 grn TSX at 3000 FPS through the lungs should do the trick. I don 't plan on taking shots longer than 100yds with the AR, for longer distances I will use my .308. If I can't take deer cleanly with the AR and this bullet with a neck or lung shot I will either try another bullet or I won't use the .223 for deer. I'm not in the habit of wounding animals and I'm not gonna start now.
Joe

Just loaded some and took them to the range they shot pretty well. They ran through the mags fine at 2.250 coal and cycled fine through my buddys Bushmaster and my Colt. I used Varget Very Happy a little fine tuning and they will be Good To Go Very Happy

I have takin three deer with the 62 grain TSX now and thought I would post some entrance and exit wound pics as a reference. (These are graphic). The use of a lighter bullet like this for deer is new to me, most of the deer I have takin with a center fire was with a .308 and 150 grain bullet. The amount of trauma this 62 grain TSX is creating is unbelievable.
These pics speak for themselves.
All shots were 50-65 yards . All were pass throughs. Deer ran from 40 -60 yards. All deer dropped within sight. All one shot kills.

Entrance 120 lb doe

Exit

Entrance 90-100 lb Doe

Exit

Entrance 120 lb Buck

Exit broke shoulder

After leg was removed

You can view Larger pics in my photo album under bullet impacts

Joe, you're right, they are tough! I hit one with a 129 gr SST from 40 yds with a .260 and literally poured the contents of the chest out when I cleaned it. He went about 50 yards like that. I guess there is enough oxygen left in the system for them to go like that even with no heart or lungs.

Joe, do you think the bullet is tumbling to cause that much damage?

I don't believe so the exit holes don't appear to be distorted or torn I just think that bullet opens very fast and is creating a great deal of shock.

Thanks, go to know. I have a buddy that wants me to harvest two does for him (I get one). He just got his spleen taken out and can't lift etc. I have two choices. Wait for two of them to line-up broadside next to each other and pull the trigger one with my 270 ... or ... use my AR. Haven't decided yet.

When I sighted in for this bullet before deer season I sighted in at 50 yards. I went to the range today I switched scopes and re sighted in . I shot at 50 yards and had a nice 1" group I decided to shot at a 100yds and the accuracy went to hell in a hand basket wtf it was shooting 4-5 inch groups. My twist rate is 1-9 you would think it should stabilize it. The holes don't appear to be key holed. I'm kinda at a loss. I may have to try the 55 grain TSX and see if there is a difference. I shot some 55 grain B-Ts at 100yds and even with a couple flyers the largest group was 1.35" wtf . What do you guys think ???

Joe did you shoot any groups prior to this at 100 yards?
Was the B-Tips shot the same day you discovered this ?
I presume you verified that you actually have a 1-9 twist (that or faster is required for that bullet)
Was wind a factor?
Maybe shoot some over a chronograph looking for consistency issues.

With all the talk about stability factor......maybe run some numbers to see what that says about things.

Just read your post about liking the new trigger !!!
Did things go bad with the addition of the new trigger?
I'm uneducated of the internal workings/operations of the AR's firing system but know that if the firing pin speed/force was effected it could cause inconsistent ignition of the primer.

I seriously doubt this to be the case but would keep it in mind !!!

I shot at 100 yrds for the first time today with this load and I shot the b-ts today so It's not the rifle . I was popin off rounds with 55 grain UMC ammo today and shot a 2 1/2 in group at 100 and wasn't trying to shoot for group. It's the 62 grain TSX I just don't no why.

I have bin trying to do some research and found this neat barrel twist calculator kwk.us/twist.html . Using this chart is says I need a 8.8 twist. I don't think my barrel is stabilizing 62 grainers enough. Im gonna order a box of 55 grain TSX's and try them and see if they do any better
