On the way back to camp a covey of quail crossed a dirt road 'bout 100y in front of me. I stopped, and watched, and watched and watched....it went on for 3 mins. I was dumbstruck. Shocked
They just had lunch and were going for a drink on somone's property. I snuck out of my truck and crept over to them bunching up under a big bush on the edge of the property. Got within 50y and I was in shock, never seen so many quail. They got a good look at me and ran, straight down the driveway towards the house. Mad But not before I flushed a bunch accross the road and into the brush...and it was ON. Razz Here a bird, there a bird, everywhere a bird bird. The wind was really howling now and they took full advantage of it with their covey mates squaking the regroup call....they'd break with that 30 mph tail wind and be gone over the road just that quick, with private property as a backstop. Mad
I missed a bunch that back-flushed as these things were rockets in that wind and I just aint that fast. And I was alone w/o any blockers, dang it. I was spinning, pumping, stalking, it was nutty! One of them still had food in his mouth. That'll teach ya to eat and run. Laughing
Man was the action hot and fast for a while though. And walking back to my truck I stepped on a Jack and it bolted....scared the bean sauce outta me!
Got back to HQ in time for a BBQ with quail, dove, crackers, cheese , etc., and frosty adult beverages. My clubmates cleaned up big time and there was plenty for everyone. |
What a magnificent day Stovey...it mirrors so many of mine out in the bush huntin'...brings back a mix of painful, happy, but fun moments.
Cheers, Vince

60* is a wee bit warmer then it should be for deer season in MN. I think it's harder to dress for the warm weater then the cold weather. I sure hope things go better tomorrow or as soon as the sun warms me up I'm gonna take a nap by a tree. The moon was so bright I didn't need a flashlight this morning, it's not to often my shadow follows me to the stand in the morning.

I recently lost my magazine spring for the shotgun while hunting. The entire assembly became lose on the 870 ... when I get the new spring I am ordering I will most defiantly be connecting the magazine cap with loc-tite this time.

The great thing about living in MN is if you don't like the weather just wait an hour. We came home to dry out and out came the sun, by the time we got changed so did the weather. We took a nap since it was raining again when it stopped raining we hurried and went out. Wouldn't you know it more rain by the end of the day it was snowing with 25 mph wind.

That looks like it would be a TON of fun. Never done anything like that. Aint rubbin' it in Wiersy, just saying I can see the attraction. It really looks like a blast woirking them quakers and honkers.

It is a blast and very additive. It can be a lot of work but it is well worth it. I jumped a flock of geese tonight while deer hunting, I was as surprised as they were. It's great sitting in the blind with a up of coffee watching the world come alive. Then out of nowhere ducks come screaming in just about knocking your coffee over.

That's why he did it when it was 90*, to hot for the beans to run.
