Along a similar line, I have a question, Can you take a 300wsm case and neck it down to 270wsm by just using the 270wsm die? Can you then load it to the 270 wsm specs and use the case in place of the real 270 wsm case?
any info is appreciated

I'm gonna say you should be able to !!!
Case dimensions are nearly identical to one another and both have an operating pressure set in the neighborhood of 63,000psi.

A word of caution when ever necking up or down.
Keep a close eye on your over all length and the thickness of your necks. It is possible to end up with to much material in the neck area and not have enough room for expansion to properly release the bullet.

Hopefully someone with experience on those cartridges will jump in.

I put a 300wsm case in the loader and ran it through the 270wsm die. I then checked it using a caliper for neck thickness, length, and every other place I could check with the caliper. I seems to me as though it would work but I'd like to have some input. I appreciate chambered221's info and would welcome further input.

thanks

Taking a 30-30 to 6mm, the necks were too thick and had to be reamed. I realize this is a lot more than 30 cal to 270 but watch for it because if you have a tight chamber you can easily go over-pressure with a too thick neck.
Safety first! we don't need to lose any shooters or guns.

Vince:

Thanks for the inquiry. Been having a go with the Cancer. Been in hospital for a while. Have an operation scheduled for this month on the 22nd.
Going to try to get a Texas pig hunt in before I go to hospital.
Shooting for next week. This is something I always wanted to do, just never could find the right spot--I don't do well on my feet--Disabled a little.
Hope to post pictures when I return from the Hospital.

Cliff

Thanks for the input. My next question is there anyone out there with the same rifle. This is a model 700 sps varmint. It has a 26" heavy barrel with a 1 in 9 1/8" twist rate. If you have the same rifle maybe you would exchange some load info. such as the powders/bullets you have tried.

toddco, IMO there is no such thing as 2 rifles being the same !!! I could have the next serial number after yours and it might like heavy bullets and yours might like lighter ones, maybe even different brand bullets, or shoot better with different powder and primer combination.

There is no doubt you can find common ground with others that have a gun like yours but that's not to say yours will be the same.
