I was at the state gameland public shooting range today scrounging for brass. Keep in mind that on Sundays, the rifle range opens at 12:00 noon. It was about 10:30 A.M. and three fellows set up their gear on shooting benches. I was picking brass out of the trash barrels when the guys started shooting. I immediately walked down to them and advised them of the starting time. In addition, I pointed out that a Deputy Warden lived nearby and might respond and would likely write them up for a fine and/or possible loss of firearm. My advice was to pack up and make tracks. They acted like I was intruding so I backed away.
About ten minutes later a fellow approached me at the trash barrel and asked if I had done any shooting. I told him I did not have a firearm with me and was simply dumpster diving. I asked if he was the Deputy Warden and he said he was. He then dealt with the three early shooters. I saw him with a fistful of drivers licenses and saw him writing field receipts.
I usually warn folks about the dangers of early shooting and get mixed responses. I believe I will keep quiet from now on. All the best...
Gil

It's amazing how important some people think they are, that the rules are for other people and not them. I hope it cost them plenty of $$$$ they sound like they deserve to pay. But I doubt they learned their lesson, most likely blame you for the whole thing. Well you can't fix stupid!

Gil,
I'm glad to hear it. Too many nitwits on the state game lands and hopefully now there will be three less.

I belong to a private range and still see where people disobeyed the rules. Target stands deliberately shot up, steel plates with holes punched by centerfire rifles (against range rules to shoot steel with "rifle" cartridges), etc.. I just plain don't understand!

Gil, keep caring! If you only get a few you have help them out and reduced the changes that infractions will result in further restrictions.

You did right Gil & it's a pity those idiots took no notice but that's no reason not to continue trying to educate others as to correct behaviour.
Keep on trying matey.

Good job Gil. You did what you could and they suffered the consequences of their own stupidity. It's the idiots like them that are causing the closing of ranges across the country. It is always to our benefit as shooters to do what we can to either educate or weed out the undesirables such as the ones you encountered.

"....press hard, 3 copies..." Stupid's expensive!
Seriously- hope they lost their guns. Them idiots aint worthy. I never could figure out the mindset of others that act intruded upon when they are breaking the rules. That's simply the sign of a moron.
And, where the trunk-monkey earns his keep. Idiots like them deserve a good old fashioned beatdown on the spot.
Just like dirtbiking, hunting or any other 'activity', Rules are there for everyone.
And to mirror others good on you for saying something. I've ratted out unsafe or unethical shooters before.
They give me the stink-eye on the way out, too.
So what. I tell 'em have fun never coming back here again, to take a class and "I hope you don't drive like you shoot, jackass!".

Kinda hard to enforce the rules when they don't even have memberships !!!
Went to the clubs rifle range one weekend just before the deer opener and found myself waiting in line to get a bench.
Started talking with a older gent I knew while waiting and he asks if I knew any of these guys, he's never seen them before.
After the next cease fire was called for target check I yelled out "Who here has a membership"
Not one soul responded. I again yelled out..."Does anyone here have a membership that gives them the rights to be here"
Finally got a "who the hell do you think you are"
My response was a dues paying member of this club that was about to get a whole lot of people arrested for trespassing !!!
About 10 minutes later the older gent and I had the range to ourselves.

Nice! I like that kind of story. Nobody wants to pay for a membership but they all think it's their right to use the range that other peoples dues pay for. All the true sportsmen show up at deer season. lol

I play the bitch sometimes and ball people out but I usually feel stupid afterwards because they usually don't heed the warning. In your case they got what they deserved, good for you!! I went hiking one time in an area that was posted no shooting, no hunting and on my way back to the car I bent down to pick something up and about 8 or so gun shots went off real close to me. Scared me to death, and pissed me off!! I stayed down until they quit. Started back to my car again and saw the boys all dressed in black and chains and had some sort of tactical looking guns. I stopped them and said "Ya know there's a reason this area is off limits to shooting" one guy laughed and the other guy asked me if I knew what time it is. I said "Ya! It's time for you two to get your nasty butts outa here!" They just walked on, didn't say anything, just kept walkin. I was livid. Glad I didn't have a gun with me....Sometimes I need a good hair pulling to calm me down.

I know....I'm gonna get in trouble some day. I don't want a concealed carry permit! I WOULD shoot somebody! I scare myself sometimes thinkin what might happen if i carried. No No No I don't shoot people out of anger, but I have the potential, that's what scares me. Yeah I saw their car and didn't think about the license plate number but thought about a good puncture to a few tires. If Jon had been with me he woulda had me by the hair for sure. He knows how to tame feral Indians.
