An old nun

who was living in a convent next to a construction site

noticed the coarse language of the workers

and decided to spend some time with them to correct their ways.

She decided she would take her lunch,

sit with the workers and talk with them.

She put her sandwich in a brown bag

and

walked over to the spot where the men were eating.

She walked up to the group and with a big smile said:

"and do you men know Jesus Christ?"

They shook their heads and looked at each other very confused.

One of the workers looked up into the steelworks and yelled out,

"Anybody up there know Jesus Christ?"

One of the steelworkers yelled down

'why'?

The worker yelled back,

"Cos his sheila’s here with his lunch"

A guy's "Shiela" is such a great term. Any background from you guys down under on how that originated?

Sheila is a common given name for a female, taken from the Gaelic name Síle/Sìle, which is believed to be a Gaelic form of Julia or Cecilia. Like "Cecil" or "Cecilia", the name means "blind", from the Latin caecus.

Sheila is also a colloquial term for a girl or woman in Australia and some other Commonwealth countries, thought to be derived from the term 'she-lag,' lag being English slang for convict. Sheila also means virtue and gentle.

In Australia, shiela is a colloquial term for a member of the female gender. It is in no way a derogatory term and is often used as a endearing reference.

Some sheila - could be any female
Sheila - ...thats her bloody name

In New Zealand we were also brought up with Bruce and couple of the Trevs,
i.e. me and a few of the trevs went down the pub, got smashed, drove to Taihape for a burger, stopped at Aunty Doreens for a feed then got kicked out for wearing our gumboots inside, then Uncle bruce had us go down to the cowshed and sort the bloody separator out, that meant we had to kick started the tractor. Cocked that up so we buggered off home with a crate we flogged off Bruces cousin Trev to watch the test. (Rugby)

We live a good life down under!

I think I'll have to visit again. I've been down under (Perth - 1979) but it also sounds like I need to go outback to pick up the entire dialect.

The voice recognition applications used on phones, etc. have different templates for Austrailian English, American English, and British English (Queen's English). So I didn't thank down under speak was considered the Queen's English.

On a similar note, my daughter taught conversational English in France for 2 years. She wasn't allow to teach the high school senior level because they had to pass their final in the Queen's English.
