So I bought this and it came in the mail today. 500$ for a Production/Industrial Grade interface card for my project.
Its a CANbus analyzer that analyzes the signals on the OBD-II connectors in your cars, but to do fancier things, such as see the entire information on the Bus and not just the "problem codes" that the typical OBD-II analyzer spits out.
Displays and Records the CAN messages:
Graphically Displaying the Bus:
Sending Messages on the Bus:
Programing Interface for CAN communications (uses Python):
Analysis of the Nodes on the network:
So I'll be able to reverse engineer the stuff I was talking about now.

Doesn't look like any kind of cannibus analyzer I've ever seen....usually just a small test tube with some colorful liquid.....oh well...yeah that looks like total fun to me! And only $500!!
What are you reverse engineering anyway? Dimi You Really Need A Girl.....no I'm not talkin about me, or anyone in particular but just look at what you're getting excited about. You're a very attractive young man, you have a brain, morals and all that good stuff, and you're spoiling your energetic youth on $500 gizmachies which may or may not get you somewhere in the engineering world. You can make a wonderful living right now, while going to school, you can hook up with Honda or Ford, they'll pay your way through college and give you huge salary to boot, life is good, relax and enjoy it...... Actually I envy you, and all you're doing, I wish I had the opportunities when I was younger to be able to fiddle with stuff like that because it's so interesting to me.
Here's what you do....reverse engineer a girl friend. You must have had one sometime. Reverse engineer your relationship and program yourself to be they way you want to be. If you envision yourself as being a certain way you will eventually be that way. You ever see a fat girl that everybody likes? Same thing. She is what she wants to be. She envisions herself as beautiful and fun and happy and she ends up being that, so much so that her friends hardly notice she's a tub with an outsie belly button. You can be that fat girl, just put your mind to it.

That's what I was thinkin'. It was a spelling error for cannabis. But then I'm in California and we just had an election about legalizing pot. Amazed me that it didn't pass.

I should have put that in Jokes-n-humor......but nobody's laughing...one of the funniest off-the-cuffs i've done.....oh well...

Thats a powerful tool there Mr. D.
I wouldn't have a clue where to start with one of them!
As Suz said, you got to get yourself a girl mate!
Often times they are far more interesting and somewhat cheaper if you know how to do it right

Dimitri,
You got a great toy, at a great price. You've decided it is a tool to make something better - good on ya!
I have an idea for an electric motor - a hub motor for an electric car that I could use some engineering help with. I believe it will be about 50% more efficient than any other motor but I need to model it to find out.
Are you interested in trying something new? Its an AC (pulsed DC?) motor and I will have to find an inverter/controller to make it work. I have a little electronics background but no engineering background at all.
I can send you some sketches if you are interested.

Galand!!!!! yer funny!!
(If ya know how to do it right)
That's where the engineering comes in

Sounds interesting. The motors I am using the CAN analyzer for are actually hub motors as well. However they have their own motor controller to handle the phase shifting required to use DC in a AC motor design.
Check your PM's.

Sooooooooo the day I am out with a girl, is the day you guys attack me that I need a girlfriend. (I've been with her for a month and a half now, almost two actually), and the day I am stuck at my college doing projects, you guys don't say anything.

NoNONO not an attack!!! Sorry didn't mean to come across that way, only suggesting and I'm very happy that you've attached yourself to something with living, breathing, warm skin on it too. I love to tease you, you know that. I think of you as sort of the nerdy younger brother that knows everything, but life. I just think of you that way, I'm not sayin you are that way. So ya got a girlie!! Way to go Dimi, now we need the details ya know. We wanna make sure you're doin everything the right way and we don't want you hitched up with some lady that's "been there- done that" ya know the kind with a family already in the making, or the toothless bar-fly that just needs a lucky guy like you. You know we wanna look out for your best interest.
I have no idea what your project is and the last thing I know you had some electric car to make and needed a motor controller to run 3 motors? So is that what this $500 thingy is going to allow you to reverse engineer? Sounds like you have a controller but not a 3 motor controller. Well anyway it sounds like fun and games to me, I don't understand the complications of it, I guess doin it from scratch is the hard part.

To make the motor controller work, I need to be able to interface with the motor's internal controllers. Which is what this card allows me to figure out how the motor's controller accesses the system controller. And then I can use the data that the motor controller gets from the system controller in my controller to make the 3 wheel system work.
PS. I've had many relationships, I'm rarely without a girlfriend, since the first time I went to college for more then a couple weeks. I just don't talk much about it, after all relationship matters are generally private, and I don't talk about it unless I have to normally.

Spoil-sport....I just wanna hear the nasty....OH nevermind Dimi, just funnin ya. Understanding that motor controller runaround reminds me of my first computer that didn't have a hard drive, a good learning experience. Oh it also reminds me of my Grand-dad, I was driving my Grandparents from here to Portland to see some family and we passed a wood chip processor (stinks to high heaven), my Grand-dad was lookin at all the pipes and silo type things and he said, "I bet no one in the world, knows what all those pipes are for". It was way beyond his comprehension. When I thought about the fact that he was in his 80s at the time, and the technology changes he had lived through, I just told him, "You're probably right".
